Sub on speaker stand

Has anyone placed their subwoofer on a speaker stand. When I say speaker stand, I don't mean a tall speaker stand. I'm referring to a short speaker stand that will raise the sub off of the floor about no more than 2 inches. If you have, was your bass response better?

I don't remember why it works this way but from everything I have read, elevating the sub from the floor is not only OK, but an improvement in a lot of cases.

I cut some high density packaging foam and placed it under my sub, raising it about 3". It did 2 things, reduced the floor vibrations (good for neighbours) and it made the bass sound less boomy (which may be a direct consequence of reducing floor vibrations). The overall effect was almost like the sub's gain had been reduced.

Listening to music with and without the foam, I liked the sound better with it present. In movies, comparing sound alone the difference was less apparent.

No, I am talking about building a custom speaker stand for my sub.

I'm going to try this exact thing with my sub. I'm getting way too many vibrations in the room, mainly due to Christmas decorations on the shelves.
At this point it's been almost impossible to calibrate the new SVS.
Next step; Felt pads under everything:D

Missed your post while I was fumbling on the keyboard.
If you plan to build a stand, make sure it is a sturdy one. Any vibrations the stand gives off will most likely cause a real annoying rattling sound.

I wouldn't invest too much time and money into a basic stand unless you're building one with a low resonance point (Ideally below you subwoofers output) to properly decouple it from the floor.

I have a buddy of mine that built one for his sub, and it really made a difference. We were looking at a movie, and I mentioned to him that his bass sound smoother and tighter. He said that it was the speaker stand that he built for it. I couldn't believe what a difference it really made. It took him about two weeks to really get it the way that he wanted it to be. He also packed the speaker stand with some material. I was just wondering if anyone else had experienced the same thing. Anyway, I think that will be a Christmas present to myself this year.

Raising the sub up away from the floor via a “stand”, essentially diminishes the boundary affect off the floor. Eliminating boundary effects generally leads to tighter and smoother response.

I’ve also tinkered with this idea a few years ago thou there were some slightly problems! The sheer size an 18” JBL staring at you is somewhat off putting!

I’m might give it second try and try and make it less opposing, while taking not of the sound with several different types of LFE.1 and sub bass in general with stereo music noting the effects on the floor and then taking notes of it raised off the floor.

There is one slight problem LOL I need a hand lifting it up thou!

Are you sure you don't need a crane to help you lift that thing.:D
