Sub making a popping sound

At least I think it is the sub. I was watching X men 3 last night with the yammy 663 jacked up to about -17.5. Every once in awhile I'd hear a popping noise when the scene got loud. It is either the left front(bose 301) or the sub. The sub is a cheapo Yamaha Sw-201 50watt. I have it turned up about 3 quarters of the way. It seems I have driven the bose louder than that before without any issues. Well if I blow something I'll finally have a reason to get new gear!

You are driving your woofer TOO loud and bottoming the woofer, which will damage it. If you install a 24db per octave filter below the 3db point of your sub it will help protect it.

I would also suggest that your sub is the problem. If you have to save$$ save and get a good sub. The LFE can demand lots of power, many times more than that little sub can do

You answered your own question right there - you're attempting to give that little sub way more than it can handle, and as TLS Guy stated, it is causing it to bottom out, rather than produce the low, clean notes that you expect from a better quality sub. Time to go sub shopping for you! (And speaker shopping, by the way... )
