I turned on my sub (Velodyne DPS-10) and all I get is loud hum.
no noise while disconnected from cable. tried different outlet and still humming. Double checked all hookups and all is ok.

thought I had a bad cable, so I exchanged it and problem still persists.

Connected to Yamaha RX-V4800

before I go and buy a new sub
hopeing this isn't a problem with my receiver...
anyone?

Are you saying you are not getting any music signal, like the sub isn't playing the source?
Are the cables you're using shielded or just regular RCA's?

Its likely that you have some type of ground loop. I think if you search on ground loop it is a topic that is visited regularly here.

I would first look at any recent changes you've made? Moving anything, adding equipment etc.

The fact that the humm goes away when the cable is unplugged makes me believe that the sub is not at fault. You should also see what happens when you leave everything connected and turn your sub on but leave the reciever off... Might help steer you in the right direction.

Good luck.

I'm with Davemcc on this one. Is the cable that you are using shielded? It sounds like your cable is picking up interference and that is what you are hearing. Does the cable run along where other cables are? Or is it alone? Try moving the cable and see if the hum gets better or worse.

had monster cable THX and replaced it with another more expensive monster sub cable (Monster Cable M Series® Bass 550 Powered Subwoofer Interconnect)...same hum

removed everything except the receiver and the sub and still same hum.

moved the sub to a different poer source yet again...same...

unplugged the cable from the receiver...still hums, as well with leaving it plugged and turning off the receiver.

seems like I'm in for a new sub very soon :(
