Sub connection help

I have a Yamaha RX-V465 receiver and a Polk PSW10 sub. My problem is I get very faint bass from my sub when I use the "Sub Pre-out" on my receiver, even if the sub is all the way up. I don't think the Sub is the problem because when I connect the sub through the "Audio Out" it sounds fine. I've gone through the manual several times and I'm pretty sure the settings are correct on the receiver. All my other speakers sound great, so I'm confused on how to fix this problem. Any suggestions would be great!

Welcome to the forum!

What other speakers are you using? I ask that so that we can help you decide if what I'm about to say is good advice.

I'd recommend for the moment to do the following:
  • Set all of your speakers to "SMALL"
  • Set the "Bass Out" menu option to "SWFR"
  • Set the "Crossover" menu option to "80Hz"
  • Turn the knob on the subwoofer that says "LOW PASS" all the way to the right so that it's on the highest number
If you've already done that, also check the subwoofer output level to make sure that it isn't turned too far down.

My other speakers are Polk CS2 center and L/R Monitor 40, I'm getting the back speakers in a few weeks. My current settings involve everything you just said, Bass Out is set to SWFR, I've tried pretty much every level of the crossover frequency, and all the speakers are set to "Small."

It would make sense that the sub-out level is just really low, I've tinkered with most of the settings, but I'm not clear exactly where the sub-out level output is located (the manual is very frustrating). Is the "Tone Control" what I need to adjust? I can increase the base to +10.0DB, but that doesn't change anything.

The description on changing speaker levels starts on page 41 of the owner's manual. The level for the subwoofer should correspond to the "SW" setting, and that can be between -10.0dB and +10.0dB.

For now, I wouldn't worry about the tone control.

The subwoofer Volume level (Gain) from the back of your sub (Polk PSW10), should be turn to about 1/3 of it's rotary knob position (about 10:30), or even 11:00 o'clock is fine.
Now in your Yamaha RX-V465 A/V receiver, the subwoofer channel level should be approximatively +/- 6db.
* The subwoofer channel level is the one that is also with all the rest of your speaker channel levels menu setup from your Yamaha receiver (Main L, Center, Main R, Surr R, Rear Surr R, Rear Surr L, Surr L, and SW). SW is the subwoofer channel level.

Like Adam said, don't use the Tone control at all; it has nothing to do with the sub level.
Make sure that your interconnect coming from the Pre Out Sub from your receiver is fully inserted in the LFE RCA In jack in the rear of your sub.
If your Polk sub has Left & Right Input jacks, you can use a Y short adaptor, with one end that has two males, while the other single end has the female jack. Then connect that Y adaptor in both Input channel jacks of you sub.

You should have plenty of sound. Also, make sure that in your Yamaha speaker setup menu, the sub is ON (engaged).

We'll wait till your next post.

Thanks for all the help guys! I think the problem was the sub output was too low. Everything sounds a lot better now, thanks to everyone who posted.
