Sub Amp suggestions please

I am going to do a DIY sub in the near future. I wanted to start by purchasing the amplifier. My room layout is in the picture below and thought you guys could give me an idea of size of amp I will end up needing. Trying to keep the overall expense to less than 500.

I want to start with the Amp as I have an old car speaker box with an 8" woofer in it that I want to play around with while I build the new sub. The car box is 10 1/2" X 10 1/2 X 21". I'll chop it up and mess around with it... no I'm not expecting much from it, just something to do while I wait on funds for the "next step" in the process.

Any advice would be helpful.. as I'm pretty noobish on all of these topics I'm having a hard time figuring out WINISD and the sort.

If it helps, I am only pushing my other speakers with my Harman AV25II receiver so if it would make any sense to use this amp to power more than just the sub I'm all ears.

Couple of things to note with the room. The ceilings in the room go from 8 ft to 20 foot with the peak being almost directly above the TV. The wall behind the couch is basically half full wall and half bar sized (about 4ft tall). Another consideration is the room behind the left loudspeaker is my 2 year olds room.. so I'm contemplating sub placement near the couch or some where away from the TV wall.

One other thing... Movie watching is going to be the use of the setup.. I don't care about music quality. I just like to feel the explosions.

I'd pick up the A250 basic from www.rythmikaudio.com I use the A350 and it has been great so far. If you want something smaller and less expensive, take a look at www.partsexpress.com as they have smaller sub amps on sale every month for under $100.
