sub + amp question...

so ive been trying to research this without any help of course.

I have a paradigm ultra cube 12 which on the spec sheet has 650 watts rms. to power that, i have the NAD t747 receiver. i believe its 60 watts per channel.

my question is simple, the sub sounds great as is, should i think about adding an amp just to get more power out of my sub? are there amps out there that will specifically deal with subs? or are there just amps that will only power every speaker and not just one specific speaker such as a sub.

im not too sure how that works.... still new to this game.

any help will be great thanks.

I'm not sure why you want to push more power into your sub. If you need more bass SPLs, you should consider getting a second sub. That would have the additional benefit of helping to smooth bass response in your room.

Amplifiers are amplifiers but typically subwoofers use plate amps that fit neatly in the box. If you want to change to something else, you would have to perform some sort of surgery on it. That's fine but if I were going to do that, I'd build a subwoofer from scratch rather than hack up a perfectly decent sub. The amplifier built into your sub is presumably matched to the capabilities of the woofer. To replace it with a bigger amp seems like a bad idea. You'll either blow the driver or not use the new amp at full power.

I believe he is under the impression that it is his receiver's output that is powering his sub and not the plate amp on the sub.

To answer your question homie.....the sub is self powered, your amps output on it is 650 watts. Your receiver's output does not affect it.
Like Jim says, if you feel you need more spl, buy a second sub.
