Sub advice...

Ok I am starting to chip away at my HT. I have the denon 3805 and have two boston acoustic VR1 as fronts. I want to get a sub and a center channel eventually. I have read all of the posts on the svs pb 10 and 12. i have also heard about the velodyne and the cadence. I have a 17 by 18 room and it is a condo. My question is should i spend the money on one of these subs or would i be fine with a cheaper one because of the neighbors? I would spend about 400 but I am not sure if i need it. I will use it for 50% music and 50% dvd. Any suggestions, if I didnt need to spend the money I was thinking about the infinity ps 10 or 12. So any help would be great. Thanks a lot.

That's a pretty sizable room. Although $400 won't buy you any SVS products, I'd still save my pennies and order a PB10 or PB12. At low volumes, you'll still realize better low end bass with those two as opposed to an Infinity, Cadence, or Velo. $400 is a tough budget, because it's slightly higher than entry level subs, and just under higher end subs.

Had you said $300, I'd say go for something like this:

For the extra $200 or so and SVS's PB10 or 12, you'll see lower Hz if you're really into movies.

I haven't had personal experience with it, but from the reviews and for the money, I would think the Dayton 10" Titanic MKIII Subwoofer Kit shipped for $349.80 at Parts Express might be a good option as well.

I don't think it would be as good as the PB10, but for the money, you'd get some solid bass from it that should keep you pretty happy for some time. With a 45 day money back guarantee, the only thing you'd be out is about an hour of assembly time and return shipping if you weren't satisfied, pretty low risk/reward ratio.

Also of note is the Rocket ULW-10. Ordering via Audioholics Special would bring you to your budget (less shipping)... -TD

You can keep checking the SVS website for Bstock PB10's. That's how I got mine. I still don't know why it was Bstock, but I saved about $50.

To calibrate the audio system using a SPL, set the master volume slightly above your normal setting. Set the SPL at 70 dB and calibrate all speakers (assuming appropriate distance to listening position already entered) to 75 dB and subwoofer to 78 dB. At least, that's what I did.

The PB10-ISD should work well for you. I use mine for about 50% music, too - and it's a great performer. The PB10 will give you some quality bass - and, hopefully, you'll need a bit less of it. Then again, the quantity will be there for you when those moments come calling.
