Stupid Question/ Expert Advice needed...

Guys, my Polk 404 sub out of no where just went out on me... its still under warranty and they are replacing it. However, in the mean time I have my new gear and want to crank it up! My question.... I have a 10-12 year old Advent Sub that I have not used in more than 5 years... I powered it up and it sounds pretty good. Do u guys see any issues/problems pairing such an old sub with my brand new Onkyo 805?? (I can't make out the Advent model number... but this thing is heavier than my Polk 404). Just wanted some opinions b4 lugging this thing to my main room!

It won't hurt anything. Unlike regular speakers, a subwoofer doesn't need to be timbre matched with the other speakers in the room. It just needs to pick up where the main speakers leave off. Even average bookshelf speakers should have no problem reaching down to 80 Hz where the receiver crossover should be set. Most lesser quality subs just won't be able produce extreme low bass cleanly or with enough dB.

You might even find out when you get your other sub back from repairs that you'd like to have two subs in the room.

It won't hurt a thing. You might find you prefer that one to the POLK. Advent made very good gear. So listen carefully, there is a good chance you are using the best sub now. Remember yours is blown and the amp at least, and may be more will be built have wrong or more in China. Just look on eBay to see what prices the better older gear fetches. And the Far Eastern buyers pay the highest prices of all. Strange world!

You now its funny... I thought the same thing. Just by weight alone this Advent Sub weighs a ton! I wish I could figure out the wattage on the thing. By size alone in comparison to my Polk I bet its gotta be at least 250-300 watts.

Question... my current sub is shielded so I have it placed next to my tv... I don't know about this Advent Sub; Shielded or not? If I place it next to my TV and its not shielded what is the worst that can happen?

I believe the shielding only matters for CRT TV, so if you have a plasma or LCD it should not matter. If you do have a CRT I think you will see distortion on the screen, if this happens move the sub away until you no longer notice it.
