Stupid PS3 Not loading BD's

Title pretty much sums it up:mad:. My PS3 just started giving me an error message, "Invalid disc, 80029906." I tried lots of different movies and resetting etc. Some will load, but after 5-20 minutes they freeze and the message comes up again. Called Sony just now and they're gonna send a box to have it shipped and serviced.

Now I'll be without BD and video games for the next two weeks, which sucks because it's getting to be cold and rainy season in Chicago.:(

What was the outcome when this happened to other people?

I have never had any issues with my PS3.

If one was so inclined, one could borrow a PS3 from BB until his got back....

I would never,, consider that as an option...

...and couldn't now if I wanted to, funds are tied up elsewhere.

I am not saying I would....but if a guy wanted too....he could. He could also just do free financing if he didn't have funds and after he discovered he didnt care for the PS3 at day 29....he could return it without ever really spending any money.....

Will it still load games and play for extended periods of time (more than 30 minutes)? Does it still play DVDs or CDs?

If it still plays games for long periods of time I am not sure what would be wrong with it, but if it doesn't and still plays DVDs and CDs then your laser is going south and is in need of replacement. If nothing plays at all other hardware may be involved. The drive spindle motor went out on mine and I got it repaired, then months after the eye went south as well (so it was just glorified upscaling player).

For whatever reason the games play longer before they freeze up and I have to eject them and start over. It all seems to have come on strong in the last day or so. I don't recall any warning signs or odd problems before late Tuesday night. Then Wednesday a couple times and Thursday, every few minutes. I was halfway through Rainbow6: Vegas2 on the "hard" level when the gaming went yesterday (thurs).

Good news is my warranty is up just after New Years, so I'd rather it happen now than in a month and a half, actually I'd rather it not happen at all, but you get my meaning I'm sure.

My box showed up from Sony yesterday and my PS3 shipped out today. I thought it was nice that the label they sent me to return it was priority air overnight. Hopefully they'll fix it quick and I won't have to wait 2 weeks to get it back. Not only do I not get to play any games, but now I'm short a BD player, so no hi-def movies either.

Did you try rebooting it? And do you have the latest firmware updates?

Rebooted it, updated the firmware from 2.5 to 2.52, restored system, searched online... Found out the laser head gets dirty over time or goes out suddenly, not an all to uncommon problem apparently, but a pain to fix. After I asked around, one of my friends had a similar issue and had to have the laser replaced on his. Sony didn't waste anytime warrantying it, they seemed aware of it happening occasionally. They'll repair/replace whatevers broken and hopefully it will be good again.

Hope you backed up your HDD - hopefully they won't even touch that if it's the pick-up assembly that needs replaced, but there's no guarantee you get your original HDD back when it gets serviced.

It's easy to back up and, from time to time, isn't a bad thing to do in case your HDD does crash.

Good advice, thanks for asking. I backed the drive up just in case they deleted something or everything. There really wasn't much on it except for my saved games. I also copied all the game profiles to a flash drive, except Rainbow6: Vegas2, which wouldn't let me copy it. I kept getting a message saying the information was not allowed to be copied. So I'm hoping the HDD backup saved that game too so I don't have to start all over again.

Similar issue happened to me, just that it stop reading any kind of disc. Happened right after I updated fw. Got the replacement 8 days later, which was not my original system. It works fine, was just a little more scratched up than my original one.

Speaking of which, the best thing I have found to polish/remove minor scratches is a really really soft cloth and Mequires tech wax car polish and speed detailer. Apply the polish front to back, let dry and remove, then do the same thing again but left to right. Go easy on the playstation logo, unless you want to rub that off.

Then spray on a little speed detailer and buff lightly and quickly until dry and shiny. Don't rub hard, use just enough pressure to apply and remove.

I was going to ask Sony to send another system until I used the car polish.
