Strange Pioneer Elite VSX45 video failure

I though my PS3 had a video problem and went through the normal rest steps.

I have a set-up in my game/media room with my older Pioneer Elite VSX 45 TX into my Mitsubishi WS-55859. Neither has HMDI so I used component to connect. The WS-5589 has only one componet input that supports 1080i HD all the other component ports are limited to 480p, so I was using the VSX 45 to switch the video. I have DishNetwork 622 HD component coming into the VSX45 SAT/TV component and the component monitor out going to the TV. That works fine. When I switch to the PS3 set at 1080i component, the picture which used to work had gone away. After checking all the connections, I tried the "reset video procedure" on the pS3 and still no picture. Connecting the PS3 directly to the TV works. Reconnecting back to the DVD port on the VSX45 doesn't work ,but it works if I switch the input to the SAT/TV input. It looks as if the video input on the DVD of the VSX45 has gone bad. I don't want to spend any more money on the Pionerr Elite VSX45; it is not my favorite receiver at all!

Right now I have DishNetwork hooked still through VSX45 to TV at 1080i and the PS3 hooked up directly to the TV component input 1 at 480p, with audio going to VSX45 via two RCA left/right cables.

Any ideas on how to get back to 1080i from both DishNetwork and PS3? This is not my primary HT room and I am not interested in spending much money on a solution, since the current one satisfies the "gamer" user

Thanks for your input,

MidCow2

P.S. - I originally replaced the Pioneer Elite because it kept powering off at medium high volume levels into my HT system. I ended up replacing it wth a Marantz which works great. I worked with Pioneer tech support and they were great (NOT), telling me their AVRs were not compatible with Definitive Technology speakers. After talking to Pioneer , I also talked to Def tech and they sated unequivocally that they were compatible with Pioneer receivers. I hate Pioneer support! However, I am considering a Pioneer Kuro Elite next year; I am not sure if that would be a big mistake or not??? Maybe a Sony XBR LCD would be a better choice ??

Hey, MidCow2. I just want to verify something. Are you saying that both of the component video inputs on your receiver support 1080i, and that they use to both work just fine for you?

Thanks.

Adam,

Sorry if I was unclear. On that particular receiver their are two component inputs: (1) SAT/TV and (2) DVD/LD and one output (3)Component Monitor
OUT.

In this room I have two HD 1080i input sources: (A) PS3 and (B) DishNetwork Receiver.

Either (A) or (B) directly to TV work.

Either (A) or (B) connected to (1) to (3) connected to TV work.

Either (A) or (B) connected to (2) to (3) connected to TV FAIL.

The common failing point is the (2) DVD/LD component input on the Pioneer receiver. One additional point of info, not mentioned earlier, If I have the (1)SAT/TV connected with a good picture and when I immediately switch to the (2) DVD/LD connection through the receiver I briefly see a flickering with vertical hold flipping of the correct image with diagonal white jagged lines. I also tried 480p resolution through the (2) DVD/LD component input with basically the same results.

Now long story short, in answer to your question, yes both worked before at 1080i. That is why I hooked it up that way, so both would work at 1080i into the old Mitsu TV :D But for right now, my "gamer" is happy and I told him if he wanted high def he could watch DVDs downstairs ;) I just think the DVD component video input part of my Pioneer went south  Oh Well!

If you're sure that the receiver has gone south and that it's not a setting that got screwed up, then I'd suggest one of the following (to perhaps somewhat increase the daily joy of your gamer):

1. Try using an adapter cable (like this one) to combine both component video sources into one, and then connect that one into the working input on your receiver. This approach only works if you only have one of the sources on at a time. It is, however, completely passive and requires no additional switching on your part.

2. Get a component video switch, like this one. This requires you to switch the video on this unit, but you can have both sources on at one time.

The linked products are just example products for the approaches that I suggest.

Adam,

Thanks, as always for your excellent advice. I think I will try one of those.

And yes, I did go through receiver settings, thought maybe that was the cause of the problem, but it wasn't.

I figured that you did! You're so good about looking through manuals for potential problems/solutions, I couldn't imagine that you'd miss something like that. Never hurts to ask, though. Sometimes I can miss the obvious things with my own stuff that I catch so easily for someone else.
