Straight Edge

Looking for a good straight edge for the circular saw. Since a tablesaw is out of the question ATM, I was thinking I could get a good straight edge for my circular saw.

I have one of these, but it's only good for 50" or less and can be a bit cumbersome to use because even though it clamps, it still needs additional clamping to really stay put.

For that length, I make a jig from plywood. They're easy to make, I like the built-in fence, and I think they work as well as those aluminum ones. I also made some for my router to use with a ½" straight bit.

I just use a 4' level for most stuff. Richard's saw sleds are great when you're going to be making a lot of cuts. If I was looking to spend a lot for the cool factor I'd be looking at FesTool (sp) that OSA likes.

No way I can throw down Festool money until after something smaller and shinier gets put on a finger round these parts. The only reason I got away with the subs is becasue they were part of a GB a year ago.

Any thought to this? Somebody at work recommended this to me

You might have to order it. It's a cheap 8' or 98' to be exact, straight edge that doesn't stay 8' long. I've never seen anybody with the fancy ones at work. I use those 7" Vise clamps with swivel feet on a level and that's the end of that. HD has those clamps for sure. $20 each. The saw sledis better because you can see where the blade is going to cut. To make a saw sled you use the factory end of a cut-off. I can't type it out right now but that is the best way. I'm sure you can follow the instructions but I can help with that if you need it.

I have the same one you have and never have slippage issues, but getting it to line up correctly is a nightmare. Anyway you could do an outfeed and infeed table saw. I can barely fit my saw on the current balcony. I'm looking forward to a house where I can make a proper setup.

Ply can make a good straight edge and can be a customizable jig too. I did that for years.

I (finally) got a table saw this year. A quality craftsman unit from the early 90's for just $160(!!) on Craigslist.

It is definitely worth it once you are able.
