Alright. I have a regular stoplight (three lights) and I want to put speakers in the three light holes so it will be able to play music from my ipod with just a regular audio jack. Ill post pictures later but here are the basic specs of what I want and whats up with the stoplight.

What I want
  • Runs on straight three pronged American plug
  • Receives audio input from basic stereo plug (I think its called 2.5mm or 3.5mm. Just your average ipod cord)
  • Costs under $200
  • Contained totally in the stoplight
  • Best quality available for this price

The Stoplight
Dimensions of an individual can-thing
  • 12.5 in diagonal
  • 9.5 by 9.5 in
  • 5.5 in deep
The whole thing
  • 30.5 in tall
  • 10 in wide
  • 6 in deep
  • 2 in hole on top and bottom

I would like the jack to come out of the hole in the top, and the power come out of the bottom hole.

Assume I have no electrical knowledge, decent woodworking knowledge (with an experienced mentor), and no super specialized tools.

probably your best bet, get the Sonic T amp, stuff it inside the stop light, then get a pair of car audio coaxial speakers as they have the tweeter and woofer built into one unit, Then in the middle light you could possibly make something to showcase the Tamp with your ipod jack or something along those lines. Honestly tho, is not a project someone can talk you through, theres going to have to be one off- fabrication of things, and engineering as you go.

do I need to build boxes inside the stoplight and if so what size; those are the kind of things I need to know.

I agree we can not talk you through this project. If you have absolutely no knowledge of electronics, this will be difficult for you to accomplish. I would put boxes inside the light. The size will depend on the driver. At your price level, it probably is a good idea to buy a cheap car coaxial drivers. I would take the back out of the the light, and make the box open backed.

This does not sound like a high fidelity project, in fact distinctly low Fi.

Perhaps its possible to find plans for a mid range mtm speaker and use the t-amp to power it? Its actually pretty easy to disassemble the t amp and solder new connections.. If you cant at least do that, you probably dont need to embark on this journey...

The MTM would consist of two woofers and a tweeter in the middle... i would recommend fabricating enclosures for each of the drivers allowing for sizes you need.

At parts express there is a project called podzuma... check that out...
