Stereo vs. Surround Sound

It didn't have the two confused, I am fully aware they are different forms of compression. I am just saying that all compression should be reduced to a minimum. Or at least make the compression inaudible. And all the MP3's I have heard don't sound as good as most CD's.

Thought I would throw in my 2 cents here.

I am a former projectionist and was lucky enough to be the one to see the transition as the local venues in Thunder Bay Ontario went from Mono cinemas(thats right...Mono) to a brand new multiplex with surround sound.

The surround sound had a different impact on different people.

The surround sound was completely accepted and enjoyed by most people-mostly the youger crowds-while it took a long time for some to come to enjoy-mostly the middle agers and some of the older crowd stopped going to the cinema all together.

Not all people like the feeling of being emersed in a presentation. A perfect example would be people who enjoy live theatre. I know that most stage productions are now miked, processed and crafted for the audience however this is still not always the case particularly in smaller productions.

So, with that being said, whether you like stereo or surround probably has alot to do with personal choice.

I still listen to movies in either 2.0 or 2.1 sometimes 4.0 wich I really think is great for those who can't afford surround.

4.0 is basically a stereo that has outputs for 2 speakers in that go in front and then 2 other ones that can go behind you.

I used to have that set up til my stereo took a crap but hey it was a small piece of crap not like the one I want to get when I work up the cash for it.

Your brain is not telling your ears, it is telling it to you:D
Your ears are just a capture tool; the brain is the interpreter, imaginer, etc:D

Generally, I prefer to enjoy the source in the number of channels in which it was recorded.

I like my two channel music in two channel stereo. I prefer movies in whichever mode it was recorded in, be it 5.1. 2.1 or even 1.0.
^I'm with stupid, 100%.

It depends. Movies definitely in surround, but for music, I usually click my way around the modes until I find the one that sounds best for the particular music. The most minimal of them continue to be best in stereo, but now and again, I find a CD that almost explodes in one of the DPL modes.

How many of you stick with Stereo rigs even for watching movies/music?

How many of you think that Surround Sound is the only way to view movies/music?

How do you prefer to listen to two channel Music formats?

Consider CD's, SACD's, DVD-Audio, LP, DVD Video, HD-DVD, Blu-Ray, and all other formats that come to mind because there are to darn many to list.

I am interested in perspectives on stereo seperates to full blown Home Theater Multi-Channel systems.
Here's my run down..
Movies always in surround..never stereo..miss way too much ambience
TV programs and hockey games, thru some form of DSP.. Yamaha DSPs are the best I've heard and absolutely slay the DSP from my older Technics 5.1 .

2 channel music. Its both CD and vinyl....but always in stereo and in pure direct without any DSP. I find teh YPAO makes the 2 channel listening a little to analytical for me. I don't have any DVD-A or SACD. I may buy a few to experiment with ( any suggestions) but I think vinyl and CD are resolving enough fro me.

Seth, I have a Yamaha RX-V1800 and I feel no need to go for seperates. It does a fantastic job and even its phono stage on the Yamaha is very very good. If you can physically seperate the rooms so that you canplay HT in one room and music in another, I wouldn't bother spliting up what you have now.

I'm Bach's biggest fan. Two channel organ music never sounds like it does in a hall or church over two speakers. But THX Neural 7.1 makes a huge improvement.
