I'm fairly certain I'm going to use my money for a 2 ch. stereo system instead of a surround sound now. I guess what I'm now interested in is a pretty fat stereo setup. My budget is $800 for the speakers and crossovers. The sub and receiver is not included in the budget. Any suggestions?

I'm pretty sure your talking about a home audio 2 channel system,am i correct? your question about crossovers has me wondering if you might be talking about car stereo.

If you are talking about 2 channel home audio you wont need external xovers as you do with most car stereo rig's,there are some exotic home audio speakers that require external xovers but 99% of home audio speakers come with built in xovers.

You need to supply some more info for us to go on, for instance what types of music do you listen to & what kind of volume level are you looking for, also what do you plan to use for amplification, reciever or amplifier wattage would really help.

If you get the right floor standing speakers the use of a subwoofer for 2 channel will not be needed for room shaking bass.

Its hard to give a viable recomendation without some background info.

I'm sorry. I'm looking to build a home audio system. I listen mostly to classic rock, however, this setup will be for a fraternity dorm so rap is a must when partying. What I'm looking for is something that can get loud and sound great at the same time. I'm really not very sure what I'm looking at power wise.

P.S. I'm a car audio competitor/basshead so a sub will be needed.

then your not looking for extreme sound quality, u need a pa system, go to pssl. com, the amps have crossovers built in, u could get 2 something like this CERWIN-VEGA PSX-123: 12-Inch 3-Way Loudspeaker (just to give u an idea) $250 a piece http://www.pssl.com/bitemdetail.tpl~waGroup1datarq~[waGroup1datarq]~eqint_KeyIDdata~36609~itemNumber~[item_number]~UID~2006080223362739~disp_IMG~Y~catgroup~%5BcatGroup%5D, & they're loud as shite. check out pro sound & stage lighting b/c they have packages with amps & financing, or ebay, etc or a pawn shop...

I have quite an impressive sounding setup for what it is. I have a pair of KLH 9915's (15", ported, 4-way) powered by a Denon PMA-300V integrated amp (55 W per side). These 9915's are loud as hell (92 dB sensitivity is pretty good) and along with the higher-quality Denon amp sound very, very nice.

Since you can afford quite a bit more than what I paid for my setup, I suggest going with a higher-end pair of floorstanding speakers with 2-12" or a 15" and a sensitivity above 90 dB or so, and as much power as the speakers can handle. If you want a sub/sattelite setup instead, I suggest going for larger sattelites (at least 8" 3-way) with a higher sensitivity as well so you don't lose that low midrange punch.

Here Is The Ticket

This might be your best bet, your looking for decent sound & extreme volume levels, your budget will go alot farther in value & overall volume levels from buying active speakers such as these jbl's im giving you this link for.

FYI an active speaker has everything you need to play music except either a reciever that has pre outs or a cd player with a volume control, active speakers include all crossovers & are self amplified with built in amps.

I have heard these exact jbl's & they rock:D check these puppies out below.

We have the same PA in our basement. Very weak and the quality is terrible. At least in my opinion. Maybe the dummies didn't have them conected right. In all honesty I was hoping for more of a quality system than a 2 way PA.

If that set of pa speakers dont flat out rock in your basement somethings wrong, somebody has something goofy going on with them.

They're loud but they don't sound very great. The bass is almsot non-existant. I'm pretty sure I would like something with nicer quality. Some fatty floorstands would satisfy me.

I agree with hifi.

They did something wrong with those JBL's. Active PA speakers sound really, really good.

And you don't think for a grand I could build something a little nicer?

Sure you could. PA speakers are really more about SPL than sound quality (as long as the sound quality is passable); therefore, PA drivers are built differently than home audio drivers. In short, you could make something you like much better for under a grand.
