Stereo audio over SPDIF connection

If I connect a DVD player to a AV receiver using the coax or optical SPDIF connection, will I be able to listen to regular CDs in basic stereo mode? or do you have to also make an analog connection? Thanks,

I only have optical on mine & cd's work fine. I do prefer my cd player over my dvd player for 2-channel. Don't know if it is because the analog works better for regular cd's or if my old cd player is just better sounding than my new dvd player. I have not got around to trying the analog connection on my dvd player to see. I just use the old cd player.
