This will use the DAC resident in the player itself. Should he use the digital feed to his receiver, the receiver's DAC would then be in play.
Actually, I'll betcha that if he selects his receiver's DVD input it'll play a regular redbook CD with no problems. The picture may be funky but all he has to do is turn off the TV.
but yes, the hi-rez formats do require a rat's nest of coax and unless he has a DVD player with internal DD/DTS to analog decoding (rare these days) he needs that digital feed to the receiver to get DD/DTS.
But, then again, many people choose to use the red/white analog feed for CD's to make the receiver's input switching a bit more intuitive, or "user friendly". Somehow it's more logical to switch to the CD input for CD's.
