Stereo - Amplifier or Player more important?

Obviously speakers and room acoustics play a huge role in the overall sound of a stereo, but what comes next, the CD player/turntable, or the amplifier? Just curious what people think has a larger impact on sound reproduction, or maybe if the two components have a unique effect not attainable by the other? Is the difference affected by amplifiers more noticeable for a given amount of money than CD players?

Definately say the amplifier. If you can pick up any cd player with optical/digital connection you should be fine.

The significance of the amp depends heavily on the speakers. Almost anything will work well with an easy load. Hard-to-drive speakers require a really good amp.
All of today's CD players sound great. The differences between them are very subtle, and many people cannot hear a difference at all.

Amplifier. It's hard to find a bad CD player nowdays. Get one that is solidly built and has low noise and you're in business. An amplifier requires a little more thought. It too should be low noise, but should also have low distortion (most do), be able to handle the impedance of the speakers, and have enough power for your listening levels in your room. But again, it doesn't cost and arm and a leg to get a solid amp. Behringer's A500 is a great value. Other companies like Crown, Adcom, and Outlaw also make solid products.
