Have you listened to these? I heard them at CEDIA in '05 and even in that barn in Indianapolis and with all of the noise, they were amazing.

A few years back I also listened to some Steinway models at my dealer; impressive but quite expensive. I have the 'cheaper' Lyngdorf amplifier.

That looks to me a highly problematic design. It is a dipole with a VERY narrow front baffle. So front to back cancellation is going to be colossal.
So the Eq required will be enormous. Crossovers are active and the power is 800 watts to the woofers and 400 watts for the top end. That may sound a lot, but for the massive Eq that will be required to overcome the cancellations of the front and back radiation will be enormous. Then you get the distortion from the wasted cone excursion cause by the out of phase condition of the front and back radiation being 180 degrees out of phase.

If that speaker is any good I will be shocked. The only guy that ever pulled this off with any integrity was Siegfried Linkwitz. I doubt they have the mathematical and design skills of the late master. I am pretty sure they don't as the woofer baffle looks far too narrow to me.

?? how is that a dipole ? what driver radiates both front to back ?
If the speaker is open backed, then it radiates equal sound front and back, except it is 180 degrees out of phase. So waves frorm front and back cancel each other which creates what is known as comb filtering, but in this case it is of extreme degree.

If you want that approach, and done properly you basically have one option and that is to purchase a Quad ESL.

I highly doubt that speaker is worth even a second look.

"If" ? Do we have pics of the speaker front and back somewhere?

Yes.

One of the daftest designs I have seen for a long time. The wealthy paradoxically are easily parted from their money.
They seem to get a lot praise, as much as Quad. Picture is a bit vague, are all their speakers the same design? I've been skeptical of Lyngdorf for a while, but they seem to hold their own among the "audiophiles".

They rate quality by the extent a products depleted their bank accounts!

Good design works with and harnesses natures natural laws. If you fight them you are far more likely that not to get a bloody nose or worse.

A bi-polar design using moving coil cone drivers is asking for a fight you will loose.

Loose or lose? You'd think an educated man would know the differrence....

Do you ever wait until listening to a speaker before forming an opinion?

Did you look into the specs, or are you only estimating the width, assuming you're using 'narrow' to describe that and not the depth?
