Static "Popping" sound when changing channels

Hi All,

I just helped a friend of the family rewire their HT setup and now somewhat occasionally when they are changing channels on the tv there is a loud static popping sound that happens. I have a toslink cable going from the cable box to his HK DPR1001 receiver and I've never seen something like this happen.

Any thoughts on what could be causing this?

It's my understanding that you can get some popping when switching from SD to HD. I get it sometimes if I flip back and forth from one of my HD channels in the 900's to say 57. As the picture re-syncs I'll get some popping sometimes. Sometimes the dropouts don't go away and I have to turn everything off than back on again. I'm told this is "normal" but whatever. It's annoying when it happens. On my setup, it's likely an HDMI handshake issue.

thanks for the reply. Definitely not a HDMI issue as i'm only using the toslink for the audio and component cables for the video, no HDMI cables are in use. I'm starting to think its just a design flaw in the receiver which royally sucks cause there's nothing I can do about it. Its pissing me off because he wasn't seeing this problem before I changed everything for him, but then again he wasn't getting digital sound at all beforehand so he should be happy about that. Unfortunately people tend to focus on the bad stuff.

Just wish there was some way to stop it from happening, because it is quite loud and startling when it does happen.

Sorry bout that. It blows when things don't work the way they're supposed to. I wish I had a better solution. Is there a way you can try a different box?

I have the same popping or clicking noise but it seems to be only on one or two channels. Never had it until I upgraded AVRs.

I had this problem too, turns out it was the cable box.

I am guessing when you change channels the digital audio stream is just being interrupted and the new stream started. That pop is the old channels audio stream getting corrupted and receiver syncing to the new stream.

When I replaced my cable box with a Tivo-HD the popping went away.

Tell them to mute before switching channels.
