Static from my system

I've looked for a solution high and low, and can't seem to find anything. So, figured I'd check to see if others have ideas on what I need to do.

At times, I get random static through the speakers of my 5.1 system, usually the center channel, but could be any of the speakers. System is based around many Monster Cable components, including Eleganza tower speakers, MPA5150 Power Amp, and power HPTS7000 and AVS2000. I have a new Denon AV4308Ci, and Sony PS3 which I use for CDs, DVD and Blu-Ray.

Most of the time, this system sounds GREAT. However, there are times that the static is very annoying, and I think it is possibly damaging to my system.

Since everything in the system is new, I'm thinking that there is interference coming from something, but I'm just not sure where, nor how to go about isolating and troubleshooting.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Can you give more details? Frequency, duration, intensity, whether it hum, buzz, or crackles. Is it associated with the use of other equipment in the home? Dies it do it on all sources? Is there anything you can think of that provokes it? Who do you share your electrical service with, or are you in a independent dwelling?

At first sight it seems you quite likely have a faulty receiver.

If you have a radio, see if you get the interference on that, at the same time. Make sure the radio is tuned to an AM station.

Frequency - it depends. Some evenings static bursts will last for several minutes - never drowning out the sound coming from TV or DVD - but not like it's completely quiet. Usually it's every few minutes or so. Other evenings, it's almost non-existent.

Duration - it depends. Sometimes it's just a crackle here and there. Other times it's a burst that lasts for a minute or more. The other odd thing is that I'll hear something that sounds like a scratching noise in the wall from one of the back speakers, then a few minutes later, the same sound from one of the fronts.

This seems to happen on all sources. A couple of evenings ago, it was really annoying. Last night, nearly none.

My wife and I just moved into a newly remodeled home, all the electrical was completely redone.

If it's a bad piece of equipment, since it happens on all sources, I can't rule out that it could be either the receiver, or the Power Amp.

Thanks.

This is an equipment problem and you need to find out which so you can get it replaced. Find out if it happens if you use the receiver amps, and side line the power amp for a while. If it goes away, it is the power amp. If it is still present, then the receiver is to blame. I'm suspicious of problems in the digital circuits of the receiver. I'm pretty certain this is an equipment problem, and has a high probability of being due to tin whiskers.

See the recent thread on this issue.

Thanks for the reply. Not necessarily what I wanted to hear, but it will help to identify the problem and either way I should be able to get a replacement.
