Statement from Samsung Electronics Regarding US Release of BD Player

The hardware development for Samsung’s BD-P1000 Blu-Ray player is complete and ready for mass production in Suwon, South Korea once these compatibility tests are passed. Samsung still anticipates that its BD-P1000 will be the first Blu-Ray player to launch at a national level in the United Sates.

Clint,

Do you have any intelligence as to whether this player will play SACD or DVD-A? The Samsung site does not mention either of these formats, which leads me to believe they do not have the codecs necessary to play either one. I know the HD-DVD vs BR battle is tied up in DRM policies of the mfrs and the content providers, but I have not heard anything about the audio formats in the din of the HD video format battles.

IMO, unlikely... especially on the cheaper sony and samsung models. I think the intial goal is to keep costs down upon introduction. Here's a link to some of the specifications for some of the intro models. Just scroll down to "specifications."

The cnet sumary is the same as that on the Samsung site-it looks like the only audio codecs supported will be Dolby Digital and DTS.
