First I am a total beginner so am trying to do my homework.

Have been Googling for articles describing what is "State of the Art" for 4K DVD Players.

While have gotten a lot of hits ~ 40,500,000 results (0.62 seconds) using keywords State of Art 4K Blu-ray DVD Players (nothing for "...") but to date have not found anything relevant.

Even tried Google scholar using same keywords ~ 1,600 results (0.14 sec) still nothing useful. Using "..." got Your search - "State of Art 4K Blu-ray DVD Players" - did not match any articles.

Appreciate any help!

Thanks

Ken

What are you looking for in state of the art? What display do you have? Is there an AVR?

Yes, while Oppo has gone out of business, remember that UHD Blu-ray Disc players are supposed to be JUST that. Blu-ray Disc players. If you are looking for 'smart' functionality, like Netflix or Amazon streaming, then a Blu-ray Disc player isn't the way that I would recommend. Instead, get a Roku player and call it done. Then get a Blu-ray Disc player which is appropriate to the setup of equipment that you actually own.

A blu-ray player isnt a dvd player, it can play dvd but its primaily a blu-ray player so dont include ‘dvd’ in the search to get more valid results.

Every Blu-ray player is somewhat state of the art. If seeking the top of the line, as mentioned, the oppo if you can still get one would be the way to go. If not the current Panasonic checks a lot of boxes. If you have AVR is good, dosent matter as much.

Thanks everyone for your comments!

I am looking for both a 4K TV and 4K Blu-ray player.

As previously mentioned am trying to do my homework.

Have had better results finding info for 4K TVs than 4K Blu-ray players.

Since posting decided to use Oppo Electronics Corporation as a state of art co and found Gene DellaSala's "Oppo UDP-203 & UDP-205 Ultra HD Blu-ray Players Review" "Both the UDP-203 and UDP-205 share critical components where it counts, the video processing and transport. Oppo once again teamed up with MediaTek to produce and manufacture a specialized 4K UHD Blu-ray decoder SoC - the quad-core OP8591, which is said to offer the most advanced image decoding and processing technology available for 4K UHD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, DVD and user-generated media formats"

Googled OP8591 and found "OPPO Digital UDP-205" "... video processing is done with a combination of hardware, digital signal processing, and firmware...The UDP-205 supports all current SD, HD, and UHD resolutions, including 4K at 60p, 4K at 50p, 4K at 30p, and 4K at 24p using various color spaces (e.g., PC RGB, Video RGB, YCbCr 4:4:4, 4:2:2, and 4:2:0). The UDP-205 will also play 4K media files and user-generated content. Decoding support includes HEVC, H.264, VP9 4K, and Hi10P video codecs. High Dynamic Range (the HDR 10 format) and Wide Color Gamut are also supported, and the player includes accurate conversion from HDR to standard dynamic range (SDR) for compatibility with older televisions."

Did find some mention of Oppo going out of business so wonder if MediaTek is releasing the OP8591 to other companies.

Originally included urls but have too few posts

I've had pretty good luck with my Oppos. I don't know if they are worth the price tag tho. I only bought them because I used to do a CIH theater screen and needed a player that could handle the vertical stretch. I've since gone to a 16x9 screen and ditched CIH so I no longer need the Oppo for that purpose. Ill keep it til it dies, but if I needed one today I personally don't think I'd order from a company on their way out. Thats just me.

FWIW I don't think you can buy any player from Oppo now (you can buy one at a premium from other sellers, tho). The Oppo Digital division is ceasing manufacturing but has pledged ongoing support....the parent company's phone sales are number four in the world last I looked....

But isnt that kind of like a woman telling you "We'll still sleep together once in a while, but I think we should break up". She may mean it at the time, but it's not gonna continue for very long.

Well that analogy doesn't do a lot for me (as once I break up I don't go back) :) Perhaps they want to simply protect their good name/rep for the phone sales which is the far larger part of their business interests? Dunno. I took a chance and bought one they day they announced ceasing of manufacturing....since I wanted to see what the fuss was about. Hoping their longevity reputation (and being there for service) pans out....that's their edge for the most part IMO.

everettT,

"What are you looking for in state of the art?" Since am totally new to 4K am trying to find out the basics so can make better 4K buying decisions.

Hoped to find some review articles but to date have not found any. Do you know of any?

"What display do you have?" Do not have a 4K display

"Is there an AVR?" do not know this acronym but am guessing it may be audio visual receiver. If this is correct,
I do not have one.

Leemix,

"A blu-ray player isnt a dvd player, it can play dvd but its primaily a blu-ray player so dont include ‘dvd’ in the search to get more valid results." Had hoped to get a Player that would be able to play everything from 4K to std DVDs. Would be nice if could also play CDs.

Will the state of art 4K Blu-ray player do this?

Also when are the new models normally released?

Any 4k HD ultra blu-ray player is supposed to be able to play 4k(hd ultra), blu-ray, dvd, cd and some also play sacd.

Well this is the $64,000 question, isn't it? Their history of support far exceeds any other disc player I'm aware of so that's on their side. They seem to have the resources and they seem sincere. But time will tell....
