Hello all,
I've been bitten by the audio bug! I've had a great sound system in my car and have finally decided to upgrade my descent mini system with new equipment. Currently, its a sony 2.1 bookshelf system with a 12" car subwoofer that I love, that is connected to my computer via RCA for most of my music. My listening habits are about 80% music, 20% movies, and of the music, I listen to drum and bass, electronic, jazz and a bit of rock and metal, but overall I like very percussive music with tight, deep beats. Based on what I have in my truck (JL audio speakers) I like a warm, deep sound that is accurate when turned down low, but sounds just as good when turned up loudly. To be really specific, one of the reasons I love my subwoofer is that it is very detailed, and because its in a larger box, it plays a tune analogous to a bass vocalist singing the same note as a tenor vocalist; it sounds overall warmer and is approached from the bottom, instead of the top, if that makes any sense.
I'd like to stay 2.1, and I'm looking to buy floor standing speakers now for a bigger/ deeper overall sound, and a receiver + amp for my subwoofer in the not too distant future. My budget for speakers is ~$250 for a pair, and in the future, ~$250 for the receiver + subwoofer amp (need ~300-500w @4ohm).
That said, I know enough about speakers and sound to know what sound I want, where to put things, etc, but I know nothing of brands. So I'd like help recommending brands of speakers that I CAN AUDITION IN PERSON, no speakers will be purchased unless I can listen to them first, and I do not mind buying used because of my budget. Also, if anyone knows of retailers in the Philadelphia area besides Best Buy/ Tweeter (too expensive
) where I can audition speakers, please let me know!
Thanks for reading!
