Star Wars: Revelations takes place between Episodes 3 and 4 of the Star Wars Saga. Emperor Palpatine's power has spread throughout the galaxy. Darth Vader is a feared figure. The Jedi are hunted fugitives. I was not overly impressed with the acting/audio in this piece, but was really impressed with a lot of the CGI stuff going on. The space/ship scenes were impressive by current standards, and made the original Star Wars effects look pretty pale in comparison.

I think there are a lot of Star Wars fans that would really get into the idea of some additional Star Wars films that don't necessarily focus on a whiney teenager and actually focus on the fall of the Jedi.

For how much animation work and the overall effort this video would have taken I am amazed that so much effort was put in for free. I would expect that this would have cost tens of thousands of dollars, at the very LEAST to put together by studios. Likely much more. Nice to see something out of our area for once. The actors all looked like people who would have way to much fun at renaisance festivals though. I am a Jedi, watch me eat!

I could not believe the people they picked as actors. Surely there has to be a better talent pool. Jay Leno's love child as the Emperor's Hand? That was the worst. The other woman wasn't the least bit attractive either - not that that she wouldn't be a great person to hang with... but for a feature film you need to have people that are easy to look at as well as act. There was no viable leading man either.

Nobody could act. Smuggler guy came close, but he needed to lose some weight.

Oh Boy...They all need acting lessons! When a giant puppet of Jaba the Hut does a better job at acting, you know you have a problem. The CG and animation was good for what it was, I was expecting worse.....but someone needs to rewrite the script, the dialog was horrible which just made their acting even worse. I will say that for a non-prof. film that was all done for fun....it was good...now they just need to seek funding from an inde. film company and do it right. Amazing what the average Joe can do with a camera and a computer.

John;

You got further than I could. After about 5 sec I declared the film unwatchable. They could take acting lessons from porn stars for a marked improvement :) I’d much rather watch an intro to a Star Wars video game than this film.

Yep I watched all 40 mins. of unspeakable poor acting (oh, wait, we are speaking about it...) The plot/idea behind it was "interesting" and I was focusing hard on the force to keep my eyes open and hoping in vain that it would get better. I'll take your words on the acting lessons.

Hey Gene, I just had a great idea for another website for you to start:

Well, when you're dealing with an all-volunteer crew -- as in, NOBODY gets paid -- sometimes you gotta be expedient. And stop calling me Shirley!

I'll have to disagree that all the acting is bad. These are people who've had acting experience, especially on stage. It doesn't matter what anyone says: Frank and Gina (Declan and Taryn) both gave nice performances in the film, as did Shane (the Cade character, and also the director). The Zhanna character may have been a bit unfortunate, I agree, but once the production started down that path, it was kind of difficult to go back.

The other woman wasn't the least bit attractive either -
The heck you say. Gina's quite pretty. Maybe not Rebecca Romijn-Stamos, but attractive nonetheless.

but for a feature film you need to have people that are easy to look at as well as act.
This wasn't a feature film, it was an all-volunteer effort. The fact that you're comparing it to professional productions is actually a pretty nice compliment, though.

Anyway, I know the relative anonymity of the Internet makes it easy for ingrates to sit back and take snarky potshots at projects like this. We know Revelations isn't without its flaws, but it is what it is. It was given freely as a gift to the community, and happily, we've made a number of fans along the way. Especially when stacked up against other fan works, we're definitely pleased with the result.

As one of the CG artists, though, I'm glad that everyone seems to like the visuals. :)

Anyway, whether you liked it or not, thanks for watching.

The visuals kicked major tail. VERY nice job. It IS very easy to sit back and criticize and I really don't mean to take away from the obvious effort that went into the production. I could list pages of things I noticed that were VERY well done, including the lighting, costumes, sets and, from what I could hear, even the sound design (which I am generally super-critical of).

You're both right. Anonimity does make it very easy to critcize, so here I go. Just kidding, while I'm sure the film won't win any oscars, for anything, ever, no matter what, even if it was the only film to get made this year, even if you throw it up against Gigli and Freddy got Fingered or She's all that, even if you wre to sign a pact with the devil promising newborns and virgins by the boatload daily...., Where was I? Oh yeah, it is not that bad. I think it was very watchable, especially the graphics. I don't really know about the quality of the sound as I have chintzy little 2 channel stereo speakers for my computer. Some of these guys could act, for real. Oh and I have to agree about Gina being cute. Yeah maybe none of the actors are keeping away the photographers from Playboy or GQ with a pointy stick, but it's not like any of them are Sandra Bernhardt or Steve Buscemi Ugly either. I'm a huge Star Wars fan, and watching this you get the feel that all those involved were too. I'd love to give the crew of this film Kudos. I think that the story idea was great. I've always wondered about the gap between Baby Vader and big bad Daddy Vader. What happened to the Jedi? Who got them all and how? I loved the adding of an Emperor's Hand right out of the Novels. (God I'm a nerd). I do think the script was a little crappy. The Dialouge especially, but like it was posted earlier these guys were all voulenteers. I think you guys did a great job, despite the deal with the devil comment. I think congratulations are in order. So here you go (I'm standing while I type this) CLAP, CLAP, CLAP. Thats my standing O. You guys accomplished alot, and congratulations again.

Good thing I don't listen to reviewers, I'd rarely would see a movie :D :D :D

While I am having trouble downloading it, the site will not let me log in, I have seen a few minutes elsewhere and am impressed, especially knowing that it is an amature film.

E.W.,

I'd just like to say WOW! That's for both everyone's effort in putting this together (espically Shane's...his name is everywhere in the credits) and for the outstanding CG. I was thinking it would be a cheesy little movie. Although it's a little cheesy, the effects are just incredible.

Thank you, and everyone else who had a hand in it, for making this film.

I have to add my compliments to those already expressed. Considering that this is from a group without the bottomless pockets it takes to shoot take after take of each scene, this is an unbelievable effort! The CGI, as mentioned, was terrific, as was the soundstage work. Acting, well, it was a nice effort by your cast but acting in front of a camera is very different from being on stage. The vocal track actually suffered in comparison to the special effects track, it was so well done. All amateurs should have the same problems.

Bravo!

Honestly, I would like to know where I can get a less-compressed version with multi channel sound, suitable for burning. This deserves to be preserved.

Cheers, and thanks!

Yes, I would like to second a vote for a cheap DVD output version, or a cheap pay to download site that charges for the bandwidth used, but provides a full MPEG suitable for DVD burning. If someone else hosts the MPEG, nobody gets any cash, but if you guys (the creators) host it, then just cover the incredibly high bandwidth charges you will run into. Likely about 2-3 GB for a high quality rendering.

(blush, blush, blush) Thanks... it's nice to know we're not completely despised by everyone out there. ;)

You would be pleased to know, then, that Zap (our compositing wizard) has started a bittorrent of the DVD .iso files. You'll find that the DVD's audio is superior to the .WMV or .MOV encoding. Sadly, there was a flub with the video render, so it's a bit aliased -- especially noticable during the CG scenes. It's still watchable, though it can get a bit distracting. (Much as I'd love to bug Shane to re-encode the DVD video, he's indicated clearly that he's done done DONE with Revelations, and I can't say I blame him one bit!)

The .iso files make up a two-disc set. One disc contains the movie (including subtitles, director and VFX comments), the other contains about an hour and a half of behind-the-scenes stuff. Get 'em here:

http://www.lysator.liu.se/~zap/revelations/

Note that due to the huge huge size, these images are available through torrent only. Once you have 'em, feel free to burn as copies as you want and pass them around.

Hey Dub,

While it is easy for folks to "rip apart" a film (myself include) it was good for what it was...I just thought the acting could use some help and some better writing for the script. If you need a script proofreader let me know :D But the SFX and CG was amazing...heck I wish I had the time and computing power to do something like this.

Well, now that I'm back from the emergency room where they treated me for the freakin' nasal burns I got from laugh-snorting a mouthful of Pinch scotch whiskey through my nose - I gotta say I don't care who you are, that was funny. :)

Dub! Great news - I will definitely re-install BT and get on it. Let me know if you have any cover / disk art you'd prefer to see used.
