I know some may be shocked, but i have never seen any of the star wars movies, and now that i am into HT, I think i might like to watch them. Was just wondering should i start from 1 and watch all 6, or should i watch 4,5,6 then 1,2,3? Thanks

I say start from 1 and go from there, if for no other reason than that it's logical.

Actually, it's a tricky question. The effects are obviously better in 1,2 and 3, but most folk would say that the story is better in 4, 5 and 6. Therefore, if you are more into a film's story, I'd go 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 to get better and better, but if effects are more your thing, then go 4 ,5 ,6, 1, 2, 3 to get better and better.

Clear as mud. :)

Forget the effects, Jedi had great effects and a concluding chapter that was the end to a classic story line. Watch them in order. You hear complaints all the time about how poor the story is for the first 3 movies, so you will be enjoying them more and more as the story unfolds, even though Episodes 4-6 don't have the same punch as Episodes 1-3 have for special effects.

Watch 4,5,6 so you have an idea of what made star wars so popular before they crapified it. Be aware that 1,2 are Crap and I say that with a capital C.

Opinion. I thought 1 wasn't bad at all; I was just plain bored with 3, but that's just mine.

I would say watch #4 first, which anyone that is at least 30 will say that #4 Is Star Wars.....
If after watching Star Wars, and you do not like the story, then don't even bother with the others....

There's no debate, you MUST watch them in order of their release. Episodes IV, V and VI first, then on to I, II and III. It's important to place yourself in 1977 to understand the impact Star Wars had on pop culture and movie making in general. Watch a few good pre-Star Wars sci. fi. flicks such as Logon's Run or Silent Running and you'll understand.

I enjoyed them all, they're good films, but hype and unrealistic expectations is why people don't like the final three (Episodes 1, II and III). On their own, they're far better movies than most. Admittedly, the actors in Ep. I, II and II didn't have quite the same chemistry as the originals.

I would say Matrix is the modern Star Wars because it had a similar impact on pop culture and film making, although arguably to a lesser extent. And unlike Star Wars, the follow ups never lived up to the first one, although they were still good. If I were the Wachowski brothers, I would have released a live action version of the Animatrix movie The Second Renaissance Parts I and II. I think that would have made people sick to their stomach's in the theatre.

I'd say watch it in the order that we all saw it in. 4, 5, 6 (the original trilogy), then 1, 2, 3 (the new movies).

You will lose so much if you watch it in the chronological order.

I agree with the 456123 but stepping back from it all its like telling someone to read a book from 150 - 300 (end) and then go back and read the beginning. The whole thing is a little comical.

I don't really agree, I had watched Harry Potter then decided to read the books. I started with book 2-3-4, then went back to book 1. And found that book 1 sucked compared to the others. So once I was involved with the story, I actually could have did without reading book 1.

Anyhow, back to Star Wars. I still say, and it obvious by most people here, that it should be watched the way George Lucas had visioned for everyone. Start with Star Wars, which is #4. If after watching 4-5-6, and you still do not like the story - Then skip the others. The only great thing was the pod race in #1. Dart Maul was cool, but to watch the movie just for him, is kinda of a waste... IMO!!!!!!!!!!

Not unless the author WROTE pages 150-300 first, then wrote the beginning. Which is what George Lucas did.

And as you watch Star Wars 4, a New Hope (which I just call Star Wars), sit back as it unfolds and remember that in 1977 NOTHING like that had ever been done. Watch as the small ship comes into the scene and then imagine how awe-struck we were sitting in the theater at the vastness of the star cruiser as it passes literally overhead.

That, and when they make the jump to light speed, were scenes that just rocked back in the Stone Age of special effects. ;)

Are you sure? I remember hearing years ago that the reason 4, 5 and 6 were made before 1, 2 and 3 was because even at that time, 4, 5 and 6 were considered to have a better storyline than 1, 2 and 3. If true, George Lucas would have had to have known the full plot.

Then again, the above could all be a lot of rubbish. I can't say for sure.

Lucas only had a very rough idea of backstory when he wrote Star Wars (like that there was one and it involved Vader). In fact, if you ever get your hands on the original Star Wars script - it's a bit (more) hokey. Only a shadow of what the final ended up being.

I like Brian's idea. #4 is what started it all and if you like it your choice is to continue and watch them like the rest of us did or go back and start at #1. I think the story will flow better starting with #1 and watching in story number not release order. Once #3 is released this November my wife and I are planning on watching them in story number to see if that's any better than the original order. IMO some of the movies are great, others good, but none of them horrible so you should enjoy them all.

Like most people here, I would suggest that you watch 3, 4 and 5 before you watch 1, 2 and 3.

I still haven't watched 3 yet, 1 was passable, 2 was just horrendous.

Em guys?, I think we're having this debate between ourselves; dloweman seems to be absent going by the silence. I'm sure he appreciated all our efforts though. ;)

You are correct there, 1 chicklet for you... LOL.

Furrycute, actually #3 did tie in pretty well to #4... But I did not say it was good. And I am a Star Wars fan.

4,5 and 6 are very different from 1, 2 and 3. It might be odd to see 1,2 and 3 in all digital production with todays SFX and then transition to a movie made in the 70's.

As previously mentioned, the story is what makes the original movies epic!

I almost wish I'd never seen them before just so I could watch all 6 in a day!!!

Buckle,

I have been checking everyday and reading posts and thanks to all, but what am I really supposed to say? It is mainly opinions which I want, but not much to reply back with. I have watch 1 and will watch 2 today as i borrowed them from a friend, then i will watch 3,4,5,6. Sorry that i went this way despite most replies, but that is just the way it worked out. thanks again to all. P.S. I thought 1 was pretty good, the pod scene was great on my paradigm monitor setup with the Pioneer 1015tx powering it!!!

I couldn't agree with you more. I myself am in the '4, 5 and 6 are better than 1, 2 and 3' camp, but I still thought 1, 2 and 3 weren't too bad. Especially 1. I think the film is decent overall, but the Pod racing scene and the fighting at the end are simply fabulous.
