Gene,
You are a wizard at many things and your opinions on gear are highly regarded by myself and others.

Leave tos, tngen, films, ds9, Janeway (even though she got lost), enterprise and any new iterations alone.

Focus on the sound... Maybe even the image.

Star Trek, needs to be seen (even the worst episodes), by as many folks from this rock as possible.

PIck on Firefly.... No wait, leave them alone too.

Just stick to the gear and how to make it better. That is what you are good at. Really good at!

Thanks
Doug

Huh? Are you referring to Wayde's up coming article or a comment on made on YT?

Based on the first trailer, Star Trek Beyond is shaping up to be a turd sandwich. It is Beyond Lameness of the last so called "Trek" movie IMO.

Gene,
You and I don't agree on some social issues. But I'll defend to the death, (well, at least to a scratch), your right to your opinion. What's more, you provide this forum for anyone to express their own opinions, no matter how misguided. For that, sir, I thank you.

BTW, my dog likes both the last Star Trek movie and turd sammiches.

I was a huge fan of Original Star Trek, Next Gen (I even didn't dislike Wesley but really didn't like Riker) but still good. Deep Space 9 grew on me. Never watched Janeway. Huge fan of Enterprise (Just not the cheap series finale where TNG cast had to be a part of and killing off Trip.

I even liked the two new release movies, though sometimes over the top, still had its heart in the right place with the Spock/Kirk friendship

The Next Movie Beyond, looks beyond awful. This is the "Jump the Shark" for Star Trek. To say this movie is going to a turd, is an insult to turds !!!!

I think they will bring back Paul Walker as a Borg lead by Vin Disel (sp?). Sorry if this is "beyond" over the top, but as a huge fan of the longtime series, I really hate where it is headed.

It was blatantly obvious to me that J.J. didn't like Star Trek when I saw the 2009 movie which had more in common with Star Wars than Star Trek.

Here is my take on Star Trek. Good Star Trek provokes thought. It makes you challenge the social norms and your very own beliefs or views on a particular matter. Just watch "In a Pale Moon Light" episode of DS9 and you will see what I mean. Star Trek is about character development, the human condition, and how we evolve to better ourselves. It's a optimistic view for humanities future. I got NONE of that in the last 2 Trek movies. They were fine as mindless action movies, but IMO they were NOT what made Star Trek great.

  • TOS - had some bad writing, but had some incredibly good storylines and character development
  • TNG - had a lot of cheese and political correctness, but made lots of magic too. The Borg, IMO best Trek villains of all time. Q, was just awesomeness!
  • DS9 - the best of Star Trek. Incredible character development, great action, humor, intelligent stories, and great built up to a wonderful conclusion.
  • Voyager - neutered the Borg :( Some really bad Sci-Fi at times and stupid storylines. But, 7 of 9 hotness and great character saved it from being put in the junk bin.
  • Enterprise- very bad acting first season. 2nd season and Xindi arc was excellent. Most of 3rd season was good but worst ending in Star Trek history. Killing Trip was just stupid and the last episode should be erased from history.

Axanar had a lot of potential until the CBS/Paramount lawsuit. Stay tuned for our article on this topic.

TOS was before my time. I've seen a few episodes, but it's not anything I crave re-watching. Star Trek: The Motion Picture was ludicrous and horribly boring. The Wrath of Khan is a classic, of course. There's not much memorable from ST3 aside from Lazarus Spock, bad weather, and Kirk's demotion. ST4 made me want to cut myself, harpoon a whale, and litter. ST5: The Final Frontier was, well, a bearded man leading a cult in a fabulous dress -- not my thing, really. The Undiscovered Country was my favorite movie based on the original series by far. I really liked that every villain believed he was acting for the greater good, and none were insane or evil for evil's sake. That's the best kind of story I think, when one can understand what drives the bad guy.

TNG was my time. Although I tend to skip every episode involving Alexander Rozhenko or Lwaxana Troi, I'm always most interested in the episodes involving Worf's development -- his internal conflict between duty and heritage, his fall from grace, and his unshakeable honor. I agree with Gene about the impossible odds presented by the Borg conflicts, and I always enjoyed the episodes with Q. Like Cos, I even got into Wesley Crusher's progression from annoying distraction to respected bridge crewman, and his eventual apotheosis. By the end, I was disappointed not to learn how much further Wesley would progress. Favorite Next Generation movie was Nemesis I think, although Data's doom felt like little more than a contrived excuse for Brent Spiner not to have to wear gold makeup any more. Still, Patrick Stewart's performance on the subsequent bridge scene draws a tear every time I watch it. First Contact comes a close second, but loses due to Zefram Cochran's douche baggery and the Enterprise crew's implausible naivety regarding it.

DS9 was an excellent series, worthy of binge watching. The many conflicts were cleverly developed and well executed. I could do without the Grand Nagus episodes, though -- inconceivable as that may be. (See what I did there?).

I never got into Voyager. Neelix made me want to set fire to my eyes. Whatever did that pretty little blonde boy see in him, anyway? I've never seen an episode of Enterprise. It just doesn't feel right to see Scott Bakula without Dean Stockwell at his side performing percussive maintenance on a misbehaving Game Boy.

Anyway, the new Star Trek cinema reboots have shown promise. The first one seemed clever, showing the crew taking completely different paths to arrive at the same destination as the original series (albeit minus a rather important planet). It also felt like cheating at the same time, though. Really? Hollywood is just going to do the whole series over, justifying it with a wave of the hand and time travel gone awry? The second was a nod to the classic Khan, but this time with a better demonstration of Khan's canonical enhanced abilities and intellect. Also, Bumbersnatch Crumpleplink can do no wrong, so cheers for the casting there.

So far, I'm digging the reboot movies. They've got a higher batting average than the original series movies. I hope the third doesn't screw up the streak.

I'm getting bored with Star Fleet Headquarters being attacked in every movie, though -- and it's going to happen again in the third one, if I'm inspecting the trailer accurately. You really don't have to keep doing that, J.J. But thanks at least for not hugging any trees or saving any whales.

The first ST reboot was extremely clever and is easily as good as any of the original series episodes. The 2nd one I'm still scratching my head about. Lets hope the 3rd one takes after the first one

Yeah, he's perfect for the role of an Indian superman named Khan Noonien Singh. :p

I've never been a Star Trek fan, or a science fiction fan at all really. Even well-done stuff like Interstellar always strikes me as contrived and ultimately silly. Certainly Jurassic Park was the concept I wish I had thought of, though I was never happy with what Michael Crichton did with it. (As usual, the book was better than the movies.) Nonetheless, the character of Q, especially as acted by John De Lancie, gets my vote for the #1 most entertaining science fiction character of all time. Though I can't even remember the context anymore, I still remember Q's line that goes something like "I read your speech, and it's dull, plodding, and pedantic, much like yourself." I'm chuckling even as I type this, because that's always what I thought of Capt. Picard. Q also me wonder, what would an omnipotent personality be like after millions of years... bored and looking for entertainment, and a trouble-maker? Seems reasonable.

The latest Star Trek movie series is entertaining. Yeah, it's too much Star Wars, but the acting is often well done, and the writing has genuine humor in it. I've watched both movies and thought true fans would be disappointed, but I came away thinking I wanted to watch them again. Hollywood does this sometimes. Olympus has Fallen, Armageddon, The Last Stand... all really dumb, but had high points that were entertaining. I know Star Trek fans have higher hopes for their movies, so I understand the disappointment.

It worked on a tribble and some random kid with a terminal illness. *shrug* I guess since there are no longer any mystical Vulcan regeneration chambers available to resurrect the plot of ST3, they had to do something. All Star Trek movies require at least some suspension of disbelief. At least we weren't subjected to a 30-minute long acid trip because the Enterprise attempted to go to warp within the Solar system, or pray that Spock's time travel calculations were correct with a slingshot around the sun.

Yeah, he's perfect for the role of an Indian superman named Khan Noonien Singh. :p

Yeah, I admit Crinklecut could've used a bit more blackface makeup. He's still a better actor than Ricardo Montalban.

At the moment, I think "The Expanse" is the most accurate sci-fi out there in terms of physics. The acting is top notch although I'm still stuck on Amos's character portrayal. What is portrayed in the book is definately NOT carried across in the TV series.

The last one was more like, star trek into fubar sandwich. The most dire and preposterous khan it was. They put khan into sleeping at the end. I guess 4th star trek would be, star trek kahn awakening.

Oh and slyly sticking an R2-D2 into one of the shots in the film, sigh that just removes me from it its just plain bloody distracting!

Benedict Cumberbatch was poorly cast for Star Trek: Into Lameness. He was so disingenuous and cringe worthy in that movie especially when he announced he was Khan. The rest of the people on set had no reaction to that and why should they? They didn't know who Khan was. Very stupid to throw Khan into that movie for the sole purpose of fan service. I dismissed Benedict as a good actor based solely on that movie until I saw him elsewhere. Then I realized he was thrown into a bad script and bad movie and did what he could.

Ricardo Montalban on the other hand is a superb actor IMO. His portrayal of Khan can never be replicated let alone surpassed. It is why still to this day he was regarded as one of the top Trek villains of all time.

Yep Star Trek Into Lameness established 2 things:
  • Magic Blood can make anyone invincible so death has no meaning
  • Transporters can take you anywhere in the universe instantaneously, rendering starships obsolete
  • Bonus: Planet Kronos is only a few minutes away from Earth at warp speed

And another thing was in STAR TREK II, Kirk and Khan never came face to face only on a viewing screen!
