GEEEEEEKS!!!

Just kiddin' I love Star Trek too. But I don't know if I'd want the TV series on DVD. With all the big budget special effects and sound we're used to nowadays, I don't want my memories to get ruined.

The Star Trek DVD seasons sets are available in the US too (in Tricorder style boxes). They have modified the audio on these disks to 5.1 Dolby and have improved the video considerably. One episode on this set that really blew me away was "City at the Edge of Forever." Besides being one of the best, if not the best, episode of TOS (The Original Show), the surround sound and subwoofer really come alive when the Enterprise travels through the "time vortices." I am really impressed with these DVDs.

By the way Dolby CP-200, I got a kick out of your avitar!

Dolby,
If your interested, they are re-mastering TOS with updated effects possibly to be released on HD-DVD/Blue-ray

cheers:)
Actually our local Fox affilliate has been showing these new updated episodes at 3 am eastern US time early Sunday mornings (unfortuantely) -- I guess they think that only vampires watch ST:TOS. I stayed up late a few weeks back and saw the episode titled "Mirror-Mirror." I really liked the new beginning title sequence that they had, but was a little disappointed with the video in the episode itself. Some of the orbiting space shots looked very nice, but others looked very phony (all the space shots are now CGI in this updated version). The colors in the scenes with people were horrendous! The colors were too exaggerated and the "blacks" in the frames had no contrast, it was completely black (and this was viewed on a standard definition CRT). The audio was nice, but I found it no better than the audio on the DVD "seasons releases" I mentioned in my post above. Perhaps other episodes have been done better than the job they did on this episode.

One thing I applaud with what this group is trying to do is to make M-type (i.e., Earth-like) planets look like Earth from space (blue and white, and not various orange and purple tints).

As much as I'd love to have the original Star Trek series, there is no way I can justify $100 per season.

I agree with you, they are vastly overpriced. I did wait quite a while before I finally got around to buying them. But being a Star Trek fanatic, I finally broke down and bought them (though one at a time a spread out over a year). I'm sure that's what Paramount was anticiapting, the majority of people who might buy these season packs will be the fanatics and they'll pay just about anything for them.

I bought all three seasons in a single box. (Each season has its own "tricorder" case.) I am really enjoying watching them again. I was a Star Trek addict as a kid.

The standard DVD version is already way more revealing than the show itself was made for (easy to recognize painted backdrops, paper mache' rocks, etc.) We really don't need to see it in hi def.:D

Yeah, I guess it kinda takes the "wonder" factor off, specially when Spock's ear color doesn't match the rest of his face.:D

Some of my favorite things include the computers (who knew that 23rd century computers would be far clunkier than 1980s computers? ) and the comunicator earpieces that Spock and Uhura wear (bluetooth, anyone?)

I'm not a trekkie, but Ilike the original with all it's flaws over the Next Generation, which to me looks like an office building with wall to wall carpeting, corporate conference room, and everyone's soooo polite, it just turned me off, I like Capt. Ham T. Kirk with his off the cuff comments, hammy lines and political uncorrectness. The guy had a problem, he'd have a drink with McCoy, that took care of it, no biggie. The Next Generation: counselors, committees, focus groups, blah, blah. Picard doesn't have half the cojones of Ham T. Kirk. He wants to grow grapes in France, booh hoo. Ham Kirk wants to retire to the planet of green horny women and start an escort service, now, who would you choose for a captain (give me the green babes):D

Oh, I agree. I absolutely love the original series. The flaws and cheesy effects are part of its charm.:)

Speaking of good cheese, have you ever seen UFO, the British series? I bought it for nostalgia's sake, I remember seeing it when I was 9, our local CBS station ran it for a while. What a great show, I think it's still availabe at Amazon, I very highly recommend you get it.
