Standard speakers mounted in-wall???

I recently set up my home theatre system with a 5.1 sony surround system. The speakers are designed to be hung on a wall or on a stand. After hanging them, I am unhappy with the asthetics of the room - black boxes hanging amidst my artwork and decor. I already have my speaker cable routed through the wall, coming out just behind each speaker. Is it possible, or recommended to mount these same speakers IN the wall? Again, they are not in-wall speakers, but they will fit. I was thinking of building some sort of fiberglass or particle board boxes to fit into the wall, run the cable in them, set the speaker in them, then cover the speaker/box with a grill to be painted the same as the wall. Am I in danger of losing A LOT of sound quality? I have in-wall rated speaker cable, so I don't see any added fire danger. What are your thoughts?

The speakers that are made for open-backed use in a wall cavity aren't designed for optimum sound quality and are more of a "This outta work" thing. Without knowing which speakers you have, I can't be totally sure but I seriously doubt that they'll sound particularly good, although I have been wrong before.
