In store is nice because it's generally (a) easier to audition speakers and (b) easier to bring them back if you decide that you don't like them. My biggest suggestion would be to go and listen and see what you like.
I'm surprised that Mazer didn't recommend the following package from SVS:
SBS 5.0 system: $599 - 10% = $540 + shipping
SVS Sub, such as the
PB12-NSD for $599 + shipping
I've never heard those speakers, but I have an SVS sub. I think that the sub is excellent and that their customer service is also fantastic. You do have to pay for shipping if you return those, though.
I'm also a fan of
Aperion Audio. You do need to order them because they are internet direct. However, they have a 30-day no risk policy. If you don't like them, you send them back and you pay nothing. No shipping (to or from) and no restocking. That, and they get great reviews for their sound quality. They have packages in your price range.
Another great option is Crutchfield. You can get the same products (in general) as you would get at BB or CC, and if your total price is over $249, then you'll get free shipping. It's also free return shipping if you decide to return the stuff.
Those are just some thoughts. Again, the best advice IMO is to audition the speakers, and the ideal place to do that is in your own home.
