Speaking of Recovery (Yamaha Aventage AVR’s recovery/backup feature)

Just a reminder here folks to back-up your Yamaha Aventage series AVR settings, so you don’t have a mild stroke like I almost did last night.

We had the pleasure last night of hosting our annual family Christmas Eve’s party here at the casa nuestra. After stuffing their faces, getting them mildly inebriated and bribing them with trinkets & presents, we sent them on their merry little way. My wife & I were quite shagged out after the seven hour marathon, more so the missus with all the cooking and whatnot, and we decided to zombie out and watch Dunkirk, in the hope that sweet slumber was right around the corner. Turn on the AVR, inset DVD, and … nothing. The video portion was fine but no sound. We simultaneously look at each other with accusatory stares and mutter WTF? All she knows is how to turn the power on, push the appropriate AV button & adjust the volume accordingly. Everything else is my bailiwick and I’m getting the ‘ol “Chop-Chop genius!” look. Obviously one of the kin was told to lower the volume during the exchanging of the presents ritual, when we were momentarily out of the room and they bollocks it up quite masterfully I must say. So I frantically start going thru the “Set Up” settings and find that in the configuration settings the “Amp On” option is turned off. I turn it back on and we have beautiful 5.1 surround sound coming thru. Queen Victoria gives me a silent nod of approval.

Tragedy averted? Not quite. After watching the 1st episode the missus just wanted to watch a Christmas Story on the DVR without the AVR. No problem dearie. But there was a problem, the HDMI pass-thru was not working [sigh]. And in that instant I went back to being Moron Boy as she trundled off to bed but not before turning back with a glacial stare that I’ve seen before. The woman is a genius in her own right, she has a mathematics degree and works as a systems analyst for a huge investment firm but for some reason she’s an electronics’ setup/options Luddite, be it our PC’s, cell phones, whatever.

Luckily sleep wouldn’t come during the night and I decided not to waste my insomnia. I went looking for the PDF owner’s manual for a clue and lo and behold in the same folder is a backup from last year to the RX-A3040. Whoo-Hoo!!! Loaded the backup, tested it and now I’m ready for the adulation I deserve whe she awakens. :)

I’m looking forward to grilling all the suspects today when they come back for another free meal. Come in my pretty.

Merry Christmas everyone.
