ok i am expanding my home theater... with the addition of a mitsu 73" and my HD dish network, i want to upgrade my currant receiver to something with hdmi support....

ive read nothing but good about the onkyo 805... so i think ill get that being a satisfied onkyo owner already...

ok my question is, the 805 is 7.1 and i showed the wife where speakers would need mounted (was looking at ascend's) and she didnt really like standard bookshelfs for the side channel.. so i was thinking dipole surrounds... they are very low profile to the wall... i think she will like them...

anyhow, i was looking at the av123 rockets and i noticed i can get a packaged deal... but its a bit more than i was looking to spend... i was hoping to spend about 1200 for speakers.

so leads me to 2 questions... i am not familiar with dipoles so what other makers have them? and are they ok to use as rear left, center, right and obviously side?

btw, if it helps my listening is 90% movies 10%music (if that)

If you want high WAF, AV123 is a safe bet. I haven't seen veneers finished as nice. They're gorgeous, especially the piano finishes.

Not to be cynical or anything but if they could be heard and not see, I think thats the one wifes would prefer. :p

Seriously though, why don't you involve her in your speaker shopping. If she gets to have input, espcially with the sound, you may end up with a speaker that may not have the looks but may sound better to you and yours. :)

Most people don't recommend Dipoles for Center Channel. They are usually for Surround Channels. Most Centers are direct front-radiating.

SG, AV123 (Rocket) has a package special until de end of november, the rockets you see pictured in one of the post have a price of $1,497.00 with freight included. The package includes as mains the RS760, and you can take your pick of dipoles or bookshelfs for your surrounds. If you mainly watch movies, go for the dipoles. They also have a package for $1,197.00, which is within your budget, that substitutes the RS760's for RS450's. Same high WAF. My wife saw these speakers online, and has been nagging me about why didn't I buy them. From reviews and opinions online, apparently they are very good speakers (I have never auditioned them).

Do not use a dipole as center...Use a dedicated center channel speaker, or a bookshelf of the same brand and series as your mains.

When my father bought his first High End Audio System back in the early 80's, I was around 12-13 yrs old, and I clearly remembered the "Woman, shut up and listen to the sound factor". Not politically correct, but much easier for us than the WAF. I am also a victim of WAF.

Maybe we should start a "Men Against WAF" club...Something like Al Bundy's "No MAMM"

Why? So we can be a bunch of sad and lonely, sexless wussies hanging around the garage taking comfort in each other's inability to live like a man?

I think not. My SMS-1 just arrived for my SVS PB12-Plus and she's going to feel the thunder.

It's just that I could never understand Al Bundy's aversion to sex and consequently never understood his concept of "No Maam".

Some form of male bonding against WAF is fine, just as long as nobody talks about their "feelings" or needs a hug. That would defeat the purpose.:D

Dipoles for rears

I would only use the dipoles for rears, certainly not for any of the front channels. Dipoles are alleged to be good for the surround sound of movies, and monopoles better for music. Personally I use monopoles. Some speakers are switchable.
