Speakers too big for receiver?

I have found a couple similar posts and replies, but none which answered my question. I am in college and so do not have much money to spend on equipment, and I also did not do much research before I bought speakers to combat the four song hip hop playlist next door. I bought two refurbished three way JBL SC310IICH 200 watt speakers and a JVC RX-7030VBK/RX receiver which is 110 watts times seven channels. I wasn't concerned about the wattage diffiference (mainly because of ignorance) until after playing music particularly loudly when the receiver got almost too hot to touch. I don't plan on playing them this loudly for as long often or again even, but will normal to fairly loud playing damage the speakers or receiver?

If the receiver got too hot to touch - "don't do that". That's as in don't crank the volume as high. Not knowing what the impedance is for the JBLs, but assuming most are operating in the 8 to 6 ohm range, could be the JVC amp is just a little wimpy.
I've had a couple of earlier JVC models with ratings in the 100 wat per channel range that were not as gutsy as the Yamaha and even Technics I've used.
