I am planning to buy YAMAHA RX-497 amplifier. The salesman of YAMAHA showroom suggested YAMAHA NS 8900 speakers . Is it a right match or do you suggest anything else. I am mostly into listening music and not much of a movie guy.

Welcome to the forum!

I think that the first question to answer is - do you like the speakers? Have you heard them? I think that people should audition several speakers before deciding on which ones to purchase. That doesn't mean that you need to spend weeks and audition hundreds of speakers. I do think that it's a good idea to listen to more than one pair of speakers, though, because it let's you know if there are others out there that you like better (or like the same but that cost less).

From what I've read online, that receiver (at least the U.S. model) can handle the impedance of those speakers without a problem (the receiver will handle a 4-Ohm load, and the speakers are nominally 6 Ohms). Those speakers have an efficiency of 89dB, so depending on how loud you like to play them, you might find that the RX-497 doesn't quite have enough power to play loudly and clearly. It might play plenty loud for you, but I wanted to mention it as something to consider. I highly recommend that you try out the combination at the dealer before buying them, or get an agreement with the dealer than you can bring them back if you don't like them.

Thank you. Can you please elaborate a bit on
" Those speakers have an efficiency of 89dB, so depending on how loud you like to play them, you might find that the RX-497 doesn't quite have enough power to play loudly and clearly. "

Is that mean the speakers ( NS 8900) can play much louder but RX - 497 can't provide that output ? What is the specification I need to look for in Speakers and Amplifier for compatiability.

Do you suggest any alternate amplifiers ? So far what I heard I liked the sound of Yamaha , and I listen country music most

I am totally new to this subject :)

Hi. I'm happy to try to explain that better.

The efficiency (or sensitivity) of 89dB typically means that when 1 W of power is supplied to the speaker, the sound output at 1 meter away from the speaker will be 89dB. The higher the efficiency number, the louder a speaker will be at any given volume input. A very efficient speaker doesn't take as much power to get loud as would an inefficient speaker.

That receiver is rated at 75W/channel. That may be perfectly fine for you. I just wanted to mention that you'll probably want to try out the combination first to make sure.

DO you have a budget in mind? How much do you want to spend? As Adam mentioned..do you like them? Do you have other speakers to choose from taht you can audition as well? Its just good to shop around and make an informed purchase then just rely on the salesman.
