Speakers? S/PDIF Pass-through Device?

Hello everyone,

I did a few searches of the Internet and the forum and found some hits but without a direct answer to my questions. The best I've found is the technical details behind S/PDIF which doesn't help me much. I'm basically very confused surrounding "speakers" vs "S/PDIF Pass-through Device" as it pertains to my setup.

The job

Lately the audio has just not been sound correct. I started to play around (oh no!) and that was my downfall!

The Auzen sound card comes with software (Oxygen HD Audio Configuration) that can output S/PDIF as PCM, Dolby Digital Live, DTS Interactive, and loopback. Also, analog output headphones - 7.1 speakers with DA 44.1KHz - 192KHz

The Pioneer claims a 192KHz DAC. I typically keep the Pioneer in "Stereo" setting with the front speakers as "large", center and surround off, and SW as "Plus."

At one point in time I had amazing sound, very realistic. Now, it just doesn't sound right.

When I use "speakers" the Pioneer indicates DTS or Dolby and Digital input depending on the Auzen software setting. When I use the "S/PDIF pass-through device" the Pioneer indicates nothing or PCM 96 and Digital input.

Here's what I'm stuck on:

  • When using "speakers" what signal is output from my SC? Digital? PCM, DTS, Dolby depending on software choice?
  • When using "S/PDIF pass-through device" what signal is output from my SC?
  • "Who" is the DAC and when?
  • With my setup, what should my system input (speakers) be? 2 CH - 8 CH? (This is more of a Windows question as I can select the speakers I have.)
  • Is there an optimal configuration?
