Speakers on bookshelves

I'm setting up an audio system in my library, which has pretty full bookshelves on three sides, and the speakers will need to go on the shelves, among books and LP's.
Almost all "bookshelf speakers" seem to be designed to stand free on speaker stands [mostly to avoid reflections and other edge effects --see the No. 9 speaker-selection mistake in the sticky article that leads off this Loudspeakers Forum.]

My shelves can be reinforced and adjusted up and down, and my budget is flexible, but my library isn't, and I intend to keep the books, records, and stereo there, so my question is: What speaker designs work well surrounded [within a few inches] by book- CD- and LP-spines? I will use sub-woofers [with books on three sides] for depth, and equalization to compensate for frequency response, but what have speaker-designers engineered to deal with reflections, edge-effects and other problems, when bookshelf-speakers are placed on BOOK-shelves?

For starters, avoid rear ported speakers. Look for front ported or sealed.

The Vandersteen VLR-1's are designed to go on a shelf, and imo sound fantastic.

Corey is 100% right. Above all else in your situation, this most crucial in my view.
