Speakers in another room

Hi all,
First, I did try reading in other places but could not find anything on this, and I did try reading the manual, but that I think was in dutch, so here goes.
I have a lower end denon reciever, my question is,,,,, can I hook up speakers in another room,,, say the basement,,,, and play just through those speakers only. I presently have a 5.1 system in my living room, but I don't want any kind of music playing there while in the basement.
Does it have to do with the zones ? or is it just switching between A and B speakers, I have tried this but I still get my music from the back speakers with this.

Thanks anyone

The reason you have music playing through the surrounds is because you have chosen a multi channel setting on the receiver.
Try setting it to direct or one of the stereo modes that excludes a subwoofer output.

What Nomo mentioned was how to use your A/B speaker switch for music in both rooms. If you have a Zone 2 option with your reciever, you can listen to music in your basement while watching movies upstairs...yes, at the same time. The separate zones can run either independant or the same sources from each other.

You may have to use an external amplifier to power the second zone or you reciever may have an amp for it, it depends on your model. If you list the model number, some one may be able to tell you. For an external amp you would connect it from you zone 2 rca pre-outs on the back of the receiver to the inputs on the amp, then run the speaker wires off that. For internal amp you may have to choose between running 7.1 speakers or zone 2, it is switched in the setup. And again, that depends on your model.

If you need an amp for your zone 2, I would recomend a factory refurbished Audiosource Amp One from uBid. They can be found fairly regularly there for around $60+sh. They aren't really powerful enough for mains, but are plenty for background music in a second zone.

Post your model number and you'll likely get a better recommendation for your particular setup.
