Did you level match the X-LS and 170SE? The X-LS take a bit more power to reach the same level.
This past Saturday, while folks were shopping, I got to hear the X-LS and 170SE's. For my ear, the X-LS did seem to play a bit lower, but the 170SE was cleaner, so it was hard to tell how much lower the X-LS was playing. I would characterize the X-LS as a bit warm, and the 170 as neutral, but those terms get so convoluted nowadays.
Through the midrange and highs though, the 170's sounded more "there", cleaner, and the detail you noted was impressive throughout especially in the mids. This was very evident with good/newer recordings. With complicated material, it was easier to pick out instruments with the 170's. On the otherhand, I can see how you feel the X-LS were more smooth or lush and how people can like that, but to me, I would rather have what is more realistic with what seems like the performers are in the same room. The X-LS did have the out of spec tweeter, but I don't think it would have made enough of a difference.
The cabinet, no contest, the X-LS is very nice and can not be touched at the price. It is solid and looks great.
IMO, the X-LS is a very good deal at its price point, and if that is what you can afford, it is a great way to go. But the CBM-170SE really does seem to put the extra money into that black box. I have a couple of more speakers that I want to listen to, but right now, the Ascends will be at least one of the speakers that I will have for an in home audition.
BTW, they were being driven with a Denon 2807 receiver and I believe a Denon 1900 disc player. I spent about 2.5 hours listening. I was lucky enough to find owners of each that wanted to hear the other speaker. There was an SVS PB-10 subwoofer available, but we didn't want to go through the hassle of adjusting it between speakers. If we did use the sub, I think it would have negated any of the bass advantage the X-LS had.
PS. I just re-read the post and it reads a little one sided because I guess I really liked the 170. I want to make sure that everyone knows that both these companies put a great product at their respective price points and I encourage anyone to try them.
