Speakers AND Sub Run From A Single Amp?

My current set-up: (EDIT)

SqueezeBox audio outs into the CD input outs of my HK3480 stereo receiver.

From the 3480 pre-outs I run RCA cables to my ATI 1502 AMP and a coax cable from the 3480 sub pre out into my Mirage S8 Subby.

From the ATI I run speaker wires into Axiom M22's.

I tried running the SqueezeBox audio outs directly into the ATI inputs and the highs were much smoother and it was easier to listen to but there was now no signal to the subbie as the audio signal bypassed the HK3480, leaving the sound a bit thin.

Question. Can I run a second set of speaker wires from the ATI Amp directly to the Mirage S8?

It seems then I could control the bass volume and crossover at the subbie, even though it would be sent the full range signal from the ATI.

Is this set-up advisable?

Thank you

Larry

Did you type that right? You don't want to connect the output of the Squeezebox to an output of the receiver. Pre-outs from a receiver go to an amp or other device that expects a line level signal. From which output on the 3820 did you connect the RCA cables to the amp?

All you should have to do is connect RCA cables from the pre-out of the receiver to the amp and then connect the outputs of the squeezebox to any line level input on the receiver (CD, Tape, Aux, etc - they are all the same except for Phono).

Thanks and no I didn't type that right. (I'll change my original post in a second, it was 6 AM). The audio outs of the Squeezebox go to the CD input and the pre-outs run to the ATI Amp. Pretty standard as you suggest.

What I want to do is bypass the receiver completely and run the SB audio outs directly to the ATI Amp. This works great but when I do this the sub no longer receives any signal via the receiever which is out of the signal loop completely at this stage.

The only thing I can think of is running another set of speaker cables from the Amp to the subbie but don't know if that's a good idea? That would mean the ATI Amp has a set of cables run to the M22's and another set run to the subbie, FROM THE SAME POSTS. Any thoughts?

mule, not only am I not running any speakers off the amp section of the receiver, I'm not sending any signal to receiver at all - no input from the SqueezeBox gets to the receiver anymore. It goes staraight to the ATI Amp. It might be easier to imagine the receiver in the garage, in a closet or wherever. I want to bypass the receiver completely and use ONLY the ATI to amplify the signal from the SB. But that leaves no way to get signal to the subbie, since the receiver is now in the garage.

Can I run a second set of speaker cables from the same posts of the ATI to the subbie? And can I do this without killing anything?

Thanks

Yes. Since the sub has it's own amp and will draw nothing from the amplifier, you can easily connect it via a speaker-level connection to the same exact posts that your speakers are connected to. But the sub will then be receiving a full-range signal and you'll need to adjust it's crossover to match where your speakers naturally roll-off.

Thanks Sivadselim, I will try it this evening.

...but even though the sub will draw no watts and only the signals, would this constitute a paralleling to change the ohmage output of the amp?....I have no experience with powered subs, but I know one thing I don't want is paralleling or amp strapping resulting in a presence change..
How much of a concern is this?

Hooked it up and it seems to work great. Nothing has blown up or melted down and it seems as though the high end is a little less brash and more smooth sounding though it is so hard to make that call without a true A/B which I did not do.

Anyway I really appreciate all the help you guys. It all seems so simple once it's figured out, but I'm still a noob when it comes to things audio.

So thanks again for the input and help.
