Speaker Wiring Question

Hi All

Heres my problem:

I have a stereo (mini system, you know cd player, radio, aux channel etc with two speaker towers).

I just got two expensive speakers towers my sister was going to throw away. I want to run these new towers with my two old towers, 1 old and 1 new per channel (left/right)

My stereo is 6ohms, so Im assuming my two old towers are 6ohms also (since it came with it).

The two new towers are 8ohms.

How can this be done if at all... Series? Parallel? Etc?

I dont know much about this sorta stuff at all so any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have tried mixing different pairs of speakers before (on a system designed for multiple speakers) and found it does not improve the sound. Each time, I concluded removing the weaker pair resulted in the best performance.
Therefore, I strongly recommend just use the better set of speakers and discard (or store) the other set.

If you absolutely must use both, the series/parralel options and probable results for a 6 ohm and 8 ohm speaker are:

1) A series connection is the safe bet, but will drastically reduce the available sound (the mini system will be pushing against a 14 ohm vs. 6 ohm load, cutting the available current to the speaker by more than half)--i.e. not recommended. :(

2) A parallel connection would have a lower resistance (3.429 ohms), but would probably push your mini-system too hard and either result in its protection circuit kicking in (if it has one) or premature death to the mini-system's amps--i.e. not recommended either! :mad:

It shouldn't hurt to try both for a brief experiment, but with the parallel connection you would assume some risk of amp failure.

FWIW: Parallel resistance is the product of the two resistors (6x8=48), divided by the sum of the two resistors (6+8=14); in this case giving a three decimal place value of 3.429 ohms. :)

So what would the better speakers be? The two original towers have what seems to me:
1 x 6", 1 x 3" and 1 x 2" speakers in each tower.

The new towers are:
1 x 8", 1 x 4" and 1 x 3" in a much larger tower.

Do you know the name brand and model of the speakers you have? The size of the drivers doesn't tell us much.

Um no idea

The mini system is awia (or something like that)

The big towers I believe are Kenwood.

Simple solution.

Since you arready have both of 'em, hook 'em up, one at a time, and see which ones sound better to you.
