Hi:

I am planing to purchase the Yamaha HTR5890 A/V Receiver but I still to decide on a speaker system that is "Wife Approved" I have a budget for the Speaker System of $ 700 - $ 1,000. Any recomendation I was looking at the B&W's but I don't know price or if they are good quality. Do you guys recomend any other systems with similar looks of the B&W.

Thanks a lot

Julio

Hi,

B&W's are indeed an excellent choice and no way to go wrong; however your budget could be somewhat short for buying a full B&W's set.
Just a side note: they're entirely built in the UK and have been highly regarded for superb quality, design, etc... (except for price).

Cheers / Avliner

Check out svsound's 5.1 set. Includes a great sub for $899 I think. I am looking in the $12-1500 range and am considering phase tech, HTD, ascendacoustics, JM lab chorus, mordaunt short THX system, and a few others. I would listen to anything available in stores in your area and order some HTD and ascend bookshelves to try. They both have 30 day return policies. HTD will even pay shipping both ways.

What % are you going to be listening to for HT vs. Muisc?
example: I am 60% HT - 40% Music

Which B&W line are you looking at? They offer lines in a wide variety of price points. Their 600 series is their meat & potatoes line but unless you're looking at the 600s or 601s (the two smallest ones in the range) I don't think you'll be able to put together a whole set within your budget. The DM602 S3s (a big bookshelf) are close to $600/pair.

I'll second the comment that B&W is QUALITY. They put together really solid, beautiful speakers that sound fantastic. They're not everyone's cuppa Earl Grey, but I personally like them a lot. I haven't auditioned the 300 series, though they're probably fine and they're definitely closer to your budget. Better check them out yourself.

Does your budget cover a 5.0 set alone or does it need to cover a sub too? (I'm assuming you're doing home theater and not just 2 channel stereo.) If it needs to cover the full 5.1 set with sub, you might have trouble finding something within your budget that looks as good as B&W but still sounds good. If you're willing to go with plain black boxes that sound amazing, DEFINITELY check out SVS's new SBS-01 5.1 system. About $900 for 5 speakers and a sub, and believe me that PB10-ISD sub is AMAZING. For a bit more Ascend's stuff is highly recommended though I haven't yet heard them myself (will soon though). Axiom might be a good choice. Not sure what you can get within your budget but they do look good and lots of folks seem to like them.

Good luck.

B&w is a good choice . Quad 11L or 12L would be a good choice too.

YOu could check out onix and axiom speakers too. and add paradigm to it. i would also look at svs system too. but you are short on funds for most for a complete system. Why not get the front three and then add to it. also look on audigon.com for demos and used that may help you get more for less.
