Hi all,
my basement HT is getting close to finished, and I need help with speaker selection....50-50 music and movies. I realize this question has been asked (and answered) before, but nevertheless...

The room is approx 11 x 20 x 7.5 and the budget is between 1-2000$ for a 7.1 config. (I could get the sub later). I was looking at Swans, Mordaunt short, BIC etc. Any recommendations are welcome.

Thanks a lot :)

I would get 7 BIC DV62clr's and have the Frias mod's done, along with a SVS PB12 +2 for a sub. In a basement you are going to need to go big with the sub.

1-2000 $$ huh? So if someone offered to give you speakers for free you would decline ;) ?

Anyhow, I'm not the most knowledgable person here, but I could ask you a few questions so the usual crowd of experts can swoop in and make their recommendations.

1) Do you prefer or need either bookshelf or floor speakers?
2) Is WAF a problem?
3) $2000 MSRP or $2000 online street price?
4) What receiver do you have?
5) Have you read some of the audioholics articles on speakers, especially the $5,000 home theater guide?

speaker help

Good questions hanse18:

I forgot to add that i was considering the Yamaha RX V1600 or 2600 for a AVR.

WAF is not a problem (I think :p )
I know there can be some significant differences in street and online prices, and would probably go with the cheapest (authorized). The problem is that I find it very tough (like a lot of others) to buy sight unseen (unheard). Not that I dont buy off the 'net, but not speakers...
I would go with floorstanders for the fronts.
I did read the guides, and I am going to go listen to Mordaunt short next week (unfortunately the guy has the "Genie" line, not the ones I want- he can get them but he wants me to put down a deposit....tricky)

Re the Frias mod- I have read a lot about this, but how does one get it done?? I live on the east coast. Also, BIC DV62clr's seem to be center channels no?

Thanks :)

For the frias mod all you do is remove the crossover and ship it to him. Yes it is a center channel but I guess people have had success in doing a complete setup with them. BIC has a pretty solid rep around here, and their Acoustech line is pretty good for budget home theaters. I wonder how many people get turned off by their website though?

Crossover mod

Never took out a crossover before, but I guess I could learn....

Their website does stink though.

Instead of all centers, would you consider their DV 64 or DV 84 configs? Do they have retail stores where one might go and listen? Also, I note that they (or an authorized reseller) sells on ebay.....("red flag!" )

You can always go to the forums of the various consumer directs and ask if someone in your area will let you come listen. Or just get a pair to audition to keep shipping down beats the heck out of driving all over IMO.
