Speaker size for in ceiling speakers

I just moved into our place and I am in the process of putting together an HT for 50/50 music and movies in my family room. The room is kind of large (17' x 30') with a pitched ceiling.

I am looking for some in ceiling for use as surrounds and height speakers. I have some fronts which will work for now.

I know in ceilings compromise SQ but there is no way to put the surounds anywhere else due to the layout.

From what I have read, the "ideal" in ceiling would be sealed and angled. I have a tight budget ($100/speaker) and the opportunity to buy some NTIC6 or NTIC8's for a decent price?

What would you recommend?

If you can, get ceiling speakers with a back box. They won't be affected by anything above them and the sound is usually more full. If you have access to the top side of the ceiling, install pre-made or make your own back boxes.

One side of the ceiling is 8' the other is 11.5' so the volume of the room is 4970 cu ft..

One of the problems with this room is that the ceiling is the roof (i.e. it is an addition) and I have no way of getting a box in the ceiling which is packed with insulation. This was kind of why I was thinking that a sealed design was the way to go.

I have read in a previous thread that a 6" in speaker reproduces mids better. Also read somewhere that to fill such a large area with sound it would be better to go for a larger cone?

Eventually, we will replace the carpeting in this room with tile (which is not my call...) if that makes any difference.

The speaker company NTIC's seemed fit the bill on my budget. Any other budget suggests are more than welcome!

You always have to consider three aspects when choosing them, like frequency response, power handling and sensitivity..and if you are placing them on an humid area, look for moisture-resistant models.

At that price level it may be hard to find an enclosed in-ceiling speaker. Also, if your ceiling is already pitched, you may not need an angled speaker.

The NTIC series from The Speaker Company (now defunct) have a sealed back. I guess there aren't many others that would in my budget. One of the reasons I was looking for an angled speaker is that the way the room is configured (when looking at the TV) the right side is at 11' and the left is at 8'. So the speaker would be leaning toward the right...if that makes any sense.

After looking around at some of the high end in ceiling Speakercraft, it seems that they tend toward a larger woofer. In terms of speaker specs, they seem decent, are moisture and are same as the MB Quart Alexxa speakers.

I'm looking to pull the trigger by the weekend so the more input the better!
