Speaker, Receiver, or connection problem?

Lately, my my whole right side speakers (main, side surround) starts off with no to very little sound with a lot of crackling just after I start it. Sometimes, it takes a few seconds, sometimes almost a whole song goes by before sounding normal again. Once everything warm up, the sound would be fine for the rest of the day. A few days goes by and I start my system again, it would go through the same thing. Not a big deal but it does bothers me, especially the money I spent....I want it perfect everytime I turn on my system. Any idea what may be causing this?

Speaker: Rocket RS850, BF, RS450.

Receiver: Onkyo 805.

Troubleshooting

Swap the left and right speakers. Since you have large floorstanders, you might just swap the speaker wire connections on the back of the receiver. If the static in on the opposite side, it is a problem with the speaker, if not, it is a problem with the receiver. Try testing in stereo mode and unplug extra channels to isolate the problem to a single speaker or receiver channel.

Offhand, it sounds like a bad electrical connection. The advice above is a good one. Reverse the connection and see if it stays with the speaker or with the port on the reciever. Make sure you also check for a problem with the speaker wire (if you changed connections on the reciever side, and the problem stayed with the speaker, change the connections on the speaker-side and see if it follows the cable).

If it is the speaker, it could be a wire connection somewhere between the binding post and the coil itself, or if could be a problem with the crossover (until it warms up). I really don't have the experience to do real diagnosis but the general rules for any trouble shooting apply.

1) switch/replace/remove individual components until you find the culpret by eliminiation.

2) to whatever extent possible, disconnect, check connections and reconnect parts to ensure proper seat/conductivity.

While I don't recognize your speaker brand, it's had to imagine how this could be a speaker issue. Most speakers don't need to "warm up", unless they have some sort of active EQ built in. I would call Onkyo about getting the receiver serviced.

I can tell you several about their tech support people. They are generally incompetent. I've had several questions about using my 805, which they rarely can answer. On the other hand I've never had to send anything to them for service, in over thirty years using their stuff.

Cold solder joint

This could be due to cold solder joint at the receiver board, get a qualified technician to have a look.
