Speaker preference?

I have the cerwin vega CV-12's, a three way setup, 1x 1 1/2" tweeter, 1x 5 1/4" midway and 12" low, and love them cause i can have them set large and they back up the sub nicely, really makin the house shake and the floor pulse on movies. But ive noticed alot of you guys use fronts that are really only mids/tweeters and let the sub do the dirty work. is there anything im missin here or is this a personnel preference?

I think use of full-range mains is personal preference and economics/space constraints. Small speakers are good for HT and music but there is the crossover which some feel detracts from music. A full range speaker is generally preferred for music in stereo as more balanced sounding without the subwoofer crossover. Also some subwoofers can go below 20 Hz for movie special effects while a full range speaker likely does not.

It's all personal preference. I prefer to listen to 2 channel without a sub, but only with full range speakers of course. I can do that with my PSB Stratus Gold's and Def Techs, but I also have PSB Stratus Silver's which don't have the amount of low end extension I would like. I use a sub with those.

It seems to be personal preference. I recently auditioned full range floor standers with and without a decent sub.

I found that using a sub seemed to really open up the bottom end.

Compared to a bookshelf and sub, I hink a floor stander can also deliver more detail and texture in the mid and upper ranges.
