Speaker placement question

I've read the sticky, but is not my situation.

The location of the seats are at the back wall where the surround backs would go.

Would it be ok to mount the surround more center of the room and point them to the listening position, as well as the surround backs?

I included a drawn picture of the area, the dashes on the right is the beam that holds up the house, and can mount speakers too.

only Dolby Digital 7.1 has rear speakers, DD 5.1 surround speakers are really "side" speakers. So, for a small room use 5.1 and, if necessary, use smaller surrounds on stands beside the listening position.

AWESOME example!!

Hmmm... Since I did get the 665 which does 7.2, what do you think of this idea.

Having the Surounds facing me like the illustration shows, and put the surround backs up high in the back but pointing down, would that work? I really don't want to make this a 5.1 setup...

You basically want to create a surround field in your listening area. With the center being the midpoint between the 4 speakers. I suggest side mounting the side surrounds at 90 degrees.

and then mounting the rears on the wall 3 feet above the listening position.

Use your EQ to setup your system. So you don't localize the surrounds and it should sound nice. Most movies are still 5.1 and downmix to 7.1. The extra speakers reduces localization.

Make sure your speakers are rear ported.

Why don't you want to make it a 5.1? There's nothing wrong with that, sometimes a rooms just not made for 7.1. If you must do 7.1 that I agree with lsiberian, mount the sides facing your seating position and place the rears up high but facing the tv. Than use your receiver to set everything up so none of your speakers are localized.

Ok, sounds good. I got the 46" TV mounted last night so this senerio will make more sense..

I think I may put my left anf right's up high above the TV.

The wiring is temporary. I just wanted to see the TV work, as I got it two days ago.. Needed to paint.
