Speaker hookup

I have just purchased a new Onkyo reciever and am having trouble with the speaker connections. One speaker is much louder than the other. When I try to adjust the balance one side (say the left) all the sound comes through that one speaker. When I turn to the right, no sound is heard. I feel like a complete idiot, but can't figure out the problem.

Did you have the speakers already so you know they are good? If not switch speakers to see the problem is with the speaker or the Onkyo. Is this an stereo receiver or a AV receiver? Don't feel like an idiot, maybe it's a defective receiver.
