Tony-

Using 12 gauge speaker wire for and "old sony htib" is like using PVC pipe as a drinking straw. Little bit overkill. jk:D

If you can, get a spool of 16 or 18 gauge and use that. You can get a huge spool cheap at Kmart or wallyworld (hate them). Save the wire for a set-up that could use it (as soon as upgradeitis sets in). If your in a bind...Trim the wires down a bit. Just cut a little off the exposed end (1/3 to 1/2 of the wires diameter). wrap the ends with electrical tape and let the new diameter hang out to connect to the speaker. Make sure there are no strands hanging out.

I've trimmed. It works fine.

Take the exposed wire, bend half of it back, and snip it off. Shove the remaining half into the spring clip hole.

i'm just afraid to do that because i feel that some of the signal will be lost
i think i'll just to have use the wire that came with the old htib(by old i mean 2003) the speakers are just so ****ty . the receiver manual warns against using wire that's too thin what do you think?

It won't. Trust me. Electricity doesn't work like that.

It will work *fine*.

Ive done it as well. It will be no problem. Especially for a short time. When you get your perminant speakers, just cut the wires back an inch or so and start fresh. Youll at least have your wires ran when you decide to get your new speakers!

it probably works fine just trimming the wire, but I wouldn't want to be carving up 12AWG wire especially if I paid good money for it..
I had the same problem as you, and I thought the answer would be to terminate with some banana clips, unfortunately the only ones I found
that would accept 12AWG were almost as big at the other end of the banana plug. I'm still looking for ones that have a smaller tip so that I can use the 12AWG wire, for now I'm using 14AWG which seems good enough for me (for now)

.....sure, sometimes you need to do some trimming to make 12 or 10 ga fit comfortably in a connection if you're not using a banana plug, which I don't feel are necessary at all....what I feel best doing is removing/cutting/stripping the insulating covering back about one-half to three-quarters of an inch, and then flair the outside individual wires leaving the inside core of about 1/3 of the individual wires standing straight up....then I snip the 1/3 of the individual strands left standing up at their base where the covering begins, and then raise back up the outside ring of indivdual wires and twist....the inside 1/3 of the individual wires beginning at the point where the covering is stripped back to, is then encased by the outside ring now reduced to fit the connection.....think of it as looking down on a dime, and with a wave of the magic wand, the middle third is removed, and the outside ring left reduces to fill the hole.....it's really not necessary to do this, but it's just something I feel better about....if this is clear as mud, I'll try again.....

Tony, head over to the local Radio Shack and get a package of these. You are looking at less than $4 after tax (pack of 4), they will fit your 12 ga cables fine, and will slip into the spring-clips on your speakers.
