I live in an 800 sqaure foot apartment. I own a tx-8511(onkyo) stereo receiver. I currently have a pair of speakers that came with my Phillips mini system a couple years ago. I can hardly listen to music without my upstairs neighbor flying off the wall because they are so inaccuratley bassy, plus they sound like dirt. Anyone out there have any reccomendations? Tower, bookshelves? I've never owned a real decent speaker and I'm not sure what to get for an apartment where I can't rattle the roof. I have a price range of about $300.

Thanks

If you can stretch your budget a little, give a listen to Paradigm Mini Monitors -- great bookshelf speakers for the price. Their quality will allow you to listen at low volumes without losing much. They MSRP for $399, but most authorized Paradigm dealers will give you about 15% off. Of course, stands will run you a few bucks too.

You might also do some research on Ascend CBM-170's -- $328/pr. They are sold only through an Internet company (Ascend Acoustics). I've never heard them, but I've read nothing but good things about them.

Finally, for well under your budget you might want to give a listen to Athena speakers -- AS-B1 or AS-B2. I understand they are good speakers at their respective price points.

This may be one of the first questions asking for speakers that don't rattle the roof!

Bookshelves are the way to go as they don't have the bass extension (no rattle) and can be paired with a sub later if your neighbor moves (or meets with an unfortunate accident). You need something that plays accurately at low volumes. Perhaps the axiom m2ti or m3ti's. At 280 and 300 shipped, both fit in your budget. Any quality bookshelf speaker should be fine.

I'll second the Ascend Acoustics 170s. I sent my Paradigm Mini-Monitors on their way once I got a pair of 170s. Outside of bottom end extension they compete favorably with Studio 20s.
