I've had a pair of totem acoustics for some time and since they're in my bedroom on an B&W stand, they are slightly lower than my head level when on my bed. Does this have a large negative impact on SQ or should I just leave it?

Optimal tweeter height is 36", but by the sound of it you are close enough.

Thanks...and with my setup, is an amplifier with the receiver needed to get the most out of the Mites, or is what I have good enough?

Based on the spec's found here:

http://www.totemacoustic.com/products/compact/mite/specifications/

it looks like you're good.

If you're looking to optimize something I think you need to consider speaker placement in relation to walls but that gets done in by available space in most rooms and then consider adding acoustic panels but that gets done in by WAF.

Before you go on a spending spree with amps you should know that the bang for the buck sound quality boost is in better speakers. I don't know anything about the Mite's but there is always better and that is likely where the improvement will be realized if that's what you need ... not that there is anything wrong with external amps. I bought a used one for just over a $100 and it's still sitting on an armoire collecting dust. I even put a quieter fan in it so that it is ready to go. I don't expect radical improvements in SQ when the time comes but this is what I call fun. :)

If you are off axis a little, you might want to put something (like a couple of coins) under the speaker to tilt it up a little. May not be worth it though, but it is cheap to try. Tilting up or down is usually more important for center speakers which are often off axis a fairly large amount.
