Speaker designers are good guys

I just called the Vandersteen Company phone # to ask a question about some used speakers I'm looking at. So I ask the operator for a tech and who gets on the phone but Richard Vandersteen. We didn't talk long but he happily answered all my questions and gave up a bunch of info I didn't even ask about but he thought I should know. Just FYI, he said the new 2CE Sinature II's have all new parts and leave the 2CE Signatures in the dust. Apparently he is part technician and part salesman-fanboy.

I also met Jim Salk at the GTG last weekend. Talk about a class act. He was personable, funny, flowing with info, and seemed to be an all around great guy. His wife was also a joy. If you couldn't tell, I liked both of them very much.

If these two are representative of most speaker designer-engineers, those of us in this hobby are definitely in some good company.

Pony up? Yeah, I'm still working on certain aspects of the language ...
... but I did meet him, didn't I? That other thread is primarily to use as a place to talk about his (and now my) speakers. There's a man behind the curtain quality to the few guys I met recently. Once you talk for a little bit you become like normal guys having a conversation but Chris' big brain almost needs to have it's own place in any conversation. I had to tell him at least once and maybe twice that I wasn't getting it ... like for real not getting it. Somehow I think he's maybe use to people not getting it but maybe they aren't as forthright about the level they are at.

I'd like to meet a Salk or even a Murphy. Honestly I'm happy enough being on Swerd's radar.
I mean that in a good way.

... for me, maybe a little but I think it's gonna be life as usual out in Virginia. All I know is that any serious speaker mod/build must include some sort of roofing material and I came loaded for bear. Four rolls of Peal & Seal and a real strong urge take something apart.

They are great guys, very easy to talk to. I've also met Ian from Axiom and Lonny from Emotiva, also great guys. I think you might be onto something here.

If Chris or Jim Salk wanted to get rich, it would happen sooner selling speaker cables than with good speakers .

I'd love to see one of our own make it big. He'd have to replace all that concrete w/something else though. The shipping costs would sink him.

Jim Salk said he got rich working for Hoover Vacumes. He started building speakers for fun. You gotta love that.

commercial engineers can't be perfectionists and be profitable in the speaker industry. Besides it would ruin his hobby. I used to love computers, but now I do them for a living.

Long ago a representative from the University of Calgary came to my high school promoting their engineering program. I asked what engineers made right out of school. He said that if I was interested in money that I should go into sales which smoothly leads me into what I really came here to say.

Down in Ft. Worth Greg, Carolyn and I walked into a high end shop (where Greg shops ). The only people in there were salesmen. Three or four of them IIRC but no customers. Still, I would bet lunch that they all had nicer cars than I ... .
